Summary Of Crooked Smile By J. Cole
Looking in the mirror, the first thing that I always notice are my abundant freckles and moles. They are prominent on my cheeks and my jawline. These imperfections have been with me since the day I was born. At one point, I even thought about whether I was adopted because neither of my parents had freckles. Growing up, I hated these “dirty spots” on my face and constantly got annoyed by the endless comments about my skin. People even said I didn’t look Korean. I remember one instance when a classmate said my skin looked like a chocolate chip cookie. That day, I went home and attempted to remove my skin lesions by rubbing my face until it got red and applied a mixture I made from some “how to get rid of your moles” website. My obsession to be rid my imperfections and the ever growing self-consciousness devoured me. …show more content…
Cole. The overall message of the song was accepting oneself and those imperfections that make one unique. I learned that J. Cole’s imperfection, his crooked teeth, made him self-conscious and insecure during his childhood. Despite the criticism and advice to change his imperfection, he refused to give in and just accepted who he was. This inspired me to do the same, realizing that the ugliness and the way I negatively perceived my moles and freckles were all just thoughts; thoughts that could be discarded in order to focus on more important things like family and success. Soon after, I became more accepting of my imperfections and ceased to care about other people’s

In the process, cosmetic and healing rationales become blurred as patients pursue an expansive, qualitatively defined state of well-being that I call ‘esthetic health’.” Our generation want the perfect body and I know all of us at least once thought about getting something done to our bodies. It’s because of what we see and what the media represents as being normal. Listening to this song Christina lets you know that everyone is not the same but we all are beautiful. This article goes to show that women are less insecure when they love their selves for who they are. Throughout this song Christina used a lot pathos and I would base this song off of an emotional setting. Christina is able to persuade us by using pathos lyrically and ethos and logos visually. This song was for Christina and her need for self-affirmation through this song. Things that dealt with the social influences of the pop culture- driven society. This would be scrutinized as a form of symbolic communication. This message is heard because pop music is popular and that allows more people to hear this song and the message more often. The…

Cole is a dynamic character and has defiantly changed throughout the story. I know this because at the beginning of the book he tries to kill the Spirit Bear and it says "Cole found courage in the Spirit Bear's stillness. It must have been scared. Why else would it just stand there instead of attacking? Cole felt his smoldering anger ignite"(Mikaelsen 64). In this example, Cole attacks the Spirit Bear simply because he thought it defined him. He also doesn't appreciate nature and thinks he can take it down. Cole thinks life is useless until he thinks about the baby sparrows. Cole thinks," The sparrows were so frail, helpless, and innocent. They hadn't deserved to die"(Mikaelsen 82). You can tell he defiantly has a change of heart when he…

Many people think that most of the teenagers in our generation are very confident and happy, especially because we believe that they don’t have anything to worry about. For Zits things are very different, due to the fact that shame is a painful feeling that plays a big role in his life. Zits says “I’m dying from about ninety-nine kinds of shame. I’m ashamed of being fifteen years old. And being tall. And skinny. And ugly. I’m ashamed that I look like a bag of zits tied to a broomstick” (4). In a point of his life, Zits became so ashamed by his appearance that he even names himself from it. However, he does not make effort to change his appearance because he does not feel valued in society. His mother’s absence and father’s betrayal made Zits become lonely and more ashamed of his life. It hurts him to see kids with their…

I’ve changed because of the different friends groups I have been. Statistics show that the top five people a person hangs around is who the person acts like. This statistic is true because the friends I have are mostly always happy, laughing, not getting caught up in other people's’ lives, and having hope for their future. Rather than my old friends I use to hang around, they were negative, talked bad about others, judged people for not having luxury items others had. Now that I have new friends, my family have told me they have seen a big attitude change in my life.…

I came to Lusher in the 8th grade. That was when I first heard that moles were an unattractive quality. I was in art class quietly painting with my soft-bristled brush coated in liquid red when I overheard a classmate ask their friend what they found attractive in girls. The brown-haired boy first listed what he found attractive in girls, such as a nice smile, clear skin, and large assets. Although after he listed the appealing aspects of what he associated with girls, he listed the “beastly” qualities including loud girls, messy hair, and ugly teeth. When he was specifying what he appreciated in girls, I became intrusive to their conversation and forgot to keep painting so it wouldn’t have been obvious I was listening in. I was broken out…

I was always told to appreciate the skin that I had although as I got older it seemed to be harder to do. Society seemed to define beauty as being lighter and I was not in that category. Zits, whose real name is Michael, is a young man with a troubled upbringing who grew up in over twenty different foster homes. “Call me Zits. Everybody calls me Zits. That’s not my real name, of course. My real name isn’t important” (Alexie 1). This is when the reader first learns that he does not have much sense of self. He was an outsider who did not fit in because of his half Native American culture that he was not familiar with because his Native American father abandoned him at a young age. This proves to be a constant struggle for Zits because he was in a primarily white area and stood out with his unique look. “There aren’t any half-breed pale-beige green-eyed Indians here” (Alexie 60). He wanted to fit in and look like everyone…

If you have had melanoma in the past or have close blood relatives that have had melanoma, they you are also at a high risk of getting melanoma. This can be because of lifestyle or inheriting a gene mutation. People who have fair skin, sunburn easily, and have red or blonde hair are more likely to get melanoma as well.
