Summary Of College's Priceless Value Of Education
When you are first starting off your freshman year at college there are a selection of courses you need to take called general education, gen eds for short, no matter what major you have decided. By its definition on Merriam-Webster general education is a program of education (as in some liberal-arts colleges and secondary schools) intended to develop students as personalities rather than trained specialists and to transmit a common cultural heritage; however, many college students would say that gen eds are a waste of time. College student have always found these requirements as simply a task that they cannot get away from, with this mind set student do not put much effort into these classes. Bruni’s most transformative educational experience came from a class with no practical application to his life; however, while society and those in power may say those types of classes are not needed, Bruni states that they are essential to people in order to create a more thoughtful and aware being. While reading this essay it enlightened me on the value on classes we are made to take, not just liberal art ones. Just because a class is not required in your pursuit for a selected major or is required to be taken by the universities curriculum does not mean it has no value. No college would force a course onto students for no reason, it gives the student a bigger view of the world around them by teaching general education. Bruni discusses liberal arts saying (specifically about his Shakespeare college course) “…it was also the steppingstone to a more aware, thoughtful existence. A big portion of my life I was a very secluded and quiet kid from middle school into freshman year of college. Being put in a class where all your assignments, quizzes, and tests were all based on your ability to speak to others sounded like a nightmare to me. Lesson after lesson I learned how to avoid plagiarism, the multiple parts of a speech, and even how to avoid speech anxiety. When it was my designated day to speak, even with all the information taught, it was the worst speech given that day due to how timid I was talking. As the days went hearing other people give their first speech helped me to understand something, that I was not alone.     It was my point of view on the death penalty, so naturally it was a touchy subject to begin with. The nature of the topic made it more difficult for me to execute (no pun intended) my speech. I walked up to the podium, fixed my papers, and started reading. The class was silent. It felt like I was reading for hours, but it took me only 10 minutes. At the end of the speech, my teacher asked for opinions and critiques. One boy said he agreed with my point of view. Another girl said, "I admired how passionate you were about what you were saying." That comment built up my non-existent confidence. It made me come to terms with my problem.     What I did find out though is that I can improve in so many aspects. Although it won't be easy to just stop being nervous out of nowhere I can improve by rehearsing more as well as preparing more for the next speech. Rehearsal is a really important factor in speech delivery and it is one of the main steps to achieve confidence. Delivering a speech can be really easy, but many factors actually contribute to it. What I need to do next time is rehearse everything well.     As I considered choosing speech towards the end of my first college experience, I decided, “why not take a jump, and just go for it?” So I did. With taking college algebra, art appreciation, and an online course as well I feared that adding a speech class would become over whelming, however it did not. I believe while making my decision to take a fifteen week course of speech through Holly in Daytona Beach was an important decision my success in the class. Instead of having a speech a week, (for a seven week course of speech) it was more like a couple a month. This gave us time to go over concepts, to be involved in small activities (more support for our grade) that related to the speeches coming up. These activities went along with the speech, and I found that those helped us make the connection as of how they related. For example, the commercial speech where we had to sell something. I believe that concept of selling a product, helped me grasp my understanding of the next speech, which was the persuasive speech. More so, as a class Mrs. Hollins told us, she did not want us to just want this class to be over, and not to think that once we leave we will never talk again (even if that is the case), but she wanted us to connect with our classmates. I believe that helped my confidence. As when I had to go up in the front of the room and talk for 4 to 8 minutes, that and the practice from over the course of going up in front of the room so much. My teacher was more like a friend, as she told us she had some sticklers for teachers and they would point out the bad, so she understood and remembered that pressure. Whereas, this teacher, she would smile and just listen. It was like she did not even have a grade book in front of her. I really liked that feeling.
