Introduction
In Faceless, author Alyssa Sheinmel tells the story of a teenage girl named Maisie who got burned in a freak accident, caused by lightening striking a tree and the resultant fire while she was running. The burn melted almost half of her face off, which included her left cheek, chin, and nose. She was given the choice of having an experimental face transplant or facing years of skin grafts and reconstructive surgeries. With twisted luck, a girl in New Zealand is killed in a car accident, providing the donor tissue. After Maisie gets the new face, she has to decide whether she should have half a face for the rest of her life and look like a “monster” or risk getting the face transplant like a total stranger to her family, friends, and peers. With numerous questions and thoughts roaming through Maisie’s head she finally agrees to the transplant. After the face transplant, Maisie comes home, looking and feeling different.
