Summary: Diversity In The Workplace
From an employee perspective, I enjoy working with a diverse age group. It is wonderful to have the knowledge and experience of the older employees, and it is intriguing to see the technology capabilities of the younger generations. However, since I fall in the ending years of the Baby Boomers, I often find myself caught in the middle concerning opinions and expectations. My group of teammates consists of a supervisor who is twelve years younger than me, a co-worker who is ten years older than me, and a co-worker who is 18 years younger than me. We work great as a team, and we are able to share our abilities and strengths with one another. One adjustment that I have been faced with is to view e-mails as a means of communication rather than face-to-face conversations, but I am working through this transition. For me, the diversity has been a very good experience, and I can foresee great opportunities by blending groups of employees. In addition, the HRM team must have the ability to manage the performance of all employees. Performance appraisals are a means of valued information, and appraisals do not discriminate by age or any other factor. However, when administering performance appraisals, a plan should already be set in motion in order to feed information back to the employees. A good HRIS can be a resource for appraisal data, and, the information can be utilized for future planning of the organization (Bethel University, 2013).
