Summary: Difficult To Regulate Behavior
This shows that during school years, children often are taught to reflect on their behaviours. However, children who are not helped to do this by their caregivers will find it increasingly difficult to regulate their behaviour. This will affect both their inner experience of themselves and their outer experience of relationships with peers (including both a best friend peer attachment of groups of friends), but in order to gain progress to allow the child to become independent it is important to note that no child is the same and therefore put in groups to categorise their behaviours.

Main and Cassidy (1988) carried out further research of Ainsworths Strange Situation procedure and found that Secure (B) children appear relaxed throughout

    In 1970 Mary Ainsworth expanded greatly upon Bowblys original work and devised an experiment called the Strange situation. The study focused on the behaviour ,in relation to attachment, of infants who were 12-18 months of age when their mother left the purpose built lab play room. The infants were watched through video cameras in the laboratory. The laboratory had two chairs in it and the play area with age appropriate toys. There are eight stages. Stage one: The mother and her baby enter the lab. The mother sits down and reads a magazine while the baby explores. Stage 2: After 3 minutes a stranger enters and briefly speaks to the mother. Stage 3: The stranger leaves the mother and attempts interaction with the infant e.g. play with them. Stage 4: The mother leaves the lab, leaving the infant alone with the stranger.     Psychologists working with lifespan development theory try to understand how, to what extent and by whom our development is influenced.     Secure attachment can be positively reinforced when the primary caregiver actively responds to the infant’s behaviour. A study by Grossman and Grossman (1991) found that children who had securely attached relationships with their mother figure were able to form and enjoy close friendships throughout life. They found those who were brought up in insecure relationships were avoidant and had little or no friends later in life.     The epistemology and ontology in this qualitative study derives from social constructionist position.     Urie Bronfenbrenner has provided a comprehensive system for analyzing developmental patterns in children. His theory suggests that in order to understand children’s development, we must have a broad view of the inter-related contexts in which the child is developing. He believes that we need to look at the impact of these symbiotic systems that influence children's development. These systems include the family of the child and expand the analysis to the school, friends, neighborhood, jobs, and larger social system that the child lives in.
