In the essay “Communication: Its Blocking and Its Facilitation”, Carl R. Rogers, a famous psychotherapist, explains the importance of fully understanding people and looking at things in their perspective. He points out that the interrupt in communication arises mainly from our instinct to judge or to evaluate our opponents’ opinion, as well as from our emotional response. The way to overcome the barriers is to listen with understanding, which means “to see the expressed idea and attitude from the other person’s point of view, to sense how it feels to him, to achieve his frame of reference in regard to the thing he is talking about” (Carl R Rogers, p396). Sounds simple but not easy to do, this approach is the key leading to successful communication.…

In Godzilla’s Footprint, author Steve Ryfle begins by stating that the film Godzilla was not released to the Unites States until 2004, fifty years after the original release in Japan. Ryfle goes on to quote critics that were flabbergasted by the contrast of two films - the original Japanese film with its primitive special effects and recollection of the horrific aftermath of the atomic bombings, versus the re-cut, copy and pasted version showed to the United states as a monster-mash entertainment film.…

There had been several rough quarters at the Engstrom Auto Mirror plant in Richmond, Indiana, a privately owned business that manufactured mirrors for trucks and automobiles and employed 209 people. For more than a year, plant manager Ron Bent and his assistant, Joe Haley, had focused their Friday meetings on the troubling numbers, but the tenor of their May 14, 2007, meeting was different. Both men sensed that they now faced a crisis at the plant. Bent was talking animatedly to Haley: “This is the third productivity problem in, what, two weeks? We can’t climb out of this downturn with performance like that.” He scowled as he signed the authorization to air-freight a large order to the Toyota plant where Sam Martinez managed the assembly line. The difference in cost was astronomical, and it had been necessitated by the slow pace of productivity at Engstrom, which meant in this case that a job due for completion on Monday wasn’t completed until Thursday. But Bent couldn’t afford to make a late delivery to Martinez; he was a prized but demanding customer who had designated Engstrom as a certified supplier one year earlier. Only one other supplier for Martinez’s plant had achieved certified supplier status—a recognition of both extraordinary reliability and quality. The worry lines on Bent’s face deepened. Certified status meant that Martinez had personally authorized Engstrom products to be used on the auto lines without a quality inspection. Along with productivity problems, product-quality issues had also been creeping into the work done at Engstrom. Bent hoped that he was not paying to air-expedite defective mirrors to Martinez. Haley said, “Ron, we both know the employees have been complaining for months, but yesterday and today the talk has been pretty hostile. I’m not saying there’s a definite connection between nearly late delivery and the grumbling I heard, but…

“The Most Dangerous Job,” an excerpt from the book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, is a narrative on the dangerous events that take place behind close doors in a slaughterhouse. In this narrative, Eric Schlosser discusses his trip to a slaughterhouse in the High Plains. Schlosser describes in vivid details his experience there. When entering the building, an upset worker at the slaughterhouse takes the author on a tour. He hands him a chain-mail apron and gloves to wear when they first enter. The chain-mail aprons are worn to protect workers from being cut by themselves or their coworkers. He then hands him a pair of knee-high rubber boots and tells him to wear them because they would be “walking through some blood.” Schlosser starts his tour from the end of the line, the fabricating room. The fab room is a cool 40 degrees and the majority of workers in the room are young Latinos half are women. Most work is done manually with hooks, knives and power saws. In the fab room everyone is busy, too busy to smile or chat. Next on the tour is the kill floor. This is the room where cattle is sliced in half with power saws by workers. The kill room is where most people get sick because it is hot and smells of manure. Schlosser expresses that workers have to dodge the swinging cattle and watch their step; otherwise they will be slammed onto the bloody concrete floor. He also notices that there are men ripping out the kidneys of cattle with their bare hands. Then Schlosser meets the “sticker” the job of the “sticker” is to stand in a “river of blood” and constantly kill steers by severing their carotid arteries. The next worker on Schlosser tour is the “Knocker.” His job is to greet the cattle in by shooting them with an air gun that propels a steel bolt. After the production line, Schlosser has seen enough. He walks outside and he can still hear the “pop, pop, pop” sound from the entrance of the…

    1. Arroyo found it strange that Budget Secretary Florencio Abad would now claim that the former senator’s office received P47 million worth of projects in February, eight months after Corona was ousted by the Senate sitting as an impeachment court. Along with Senators Miriam Defensor-Santiago and Ferdinand Marcos Jr. , Arroyo voted to acquit Corona of charges of betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution for dishonesty in his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth. “The accusation that Malacañang ‘rewarded’ the senators who voted to convict (Corona) puts Malacañang on a slippery slope, placing the charge of at least impropriety, if not outright bribery, right at the presidential doorstep,” he said. Of the 20 senators who voted to convict Corona, only then Sen. Panfilo Lacson did not accept the additional pork from the executive larder, according to Abad.…

The Iliad begins with the Trojan War already in progress. Greek audiences would have been familiar with the background of the story, and here a brief summary of events is necessary to help the reader to put these events in context. It is important to remember that these stories had a life outside of Homer: he did not invent his characters or the main events of the epic. He did make key choices regarding which events and characters were to be emphasized and reinterpreted. The Iliad focuses on events that take place in the tenth year of the Trojan War. Myth, in constant retelling, changes its form constantly. The myths have some elements that are very familiar to modern readers but were unknown or ignored by Homer. For example, a widely known story holds that Achilles was immortal, except for his heel. But although Homer's Achilles is an unmatched warrior, not once in the Iliad does Homer present Achilles as more or less vulnerable than anyone else; either the story was a later addition or Homer chose to ignore it. The myths Homer drew on for his tale had many variants, so in giving the background outside of Homer's text this study guide will try to present only the most fundamental elements of the story of Troy. Paris, also known as Alexander, was a prince of Troy, a kingdom in Asia Minor. During his travels, he was a guest of Menelaus, a king in Sparta. Menelaus' wife was Helen, a woman of legendary beauty; she and Paris fell in love and he took her with him back to Troy. The rulers of the Greek kingdoms raised a powerful army and a fleet of over a thousand ships to win back Helen with strength of arms. Led by Agamemnon, Menelaus' older brother, the Greeks (called "Achaeans" or "Argives" or "Danaans" throughout the poem) sailed for Troy and began a war that was destined to last for ten long years.…
