Summarise key aspects of legislation, regulatory requirements and codes of practice relating to own role and responsibilities
As a teacher, it is my responsibility that I maintain an up to date knowledge of relevant legislation and codes of practice. In addition, to adhere to the Data Protection Act 2003, I will, ensure that I obtain, hold, and use or disclose personal information provided by my students in accordance with the Act.
Acknowledging the copyright and source of any material from books, journals or the internet I use within my training material to ensure I comply with the Copyright, Design and Patents Act 1988. I will implement my responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 to promote equality and diversity and ensure inclusive learning.
I will adhere to the Freedom of Information Act 2000 informing my students that legal right to see information about them held by me or the organisation employing me. It is therefore important that any information I retain is accurate and supported by evidence that support any professional opinion.
On a day to day basis as a teacher I have a duty to comply with the provisions of the Health & Safety at Work Act (HSAWA) (1974). I will include risk assessments within my session plans highlighting to my students the identified risks and the control measures they should adopt to minimize the risk of harm to themselves or others.
By performing my roles and responsibilities to the best of my ability and by adhering to required legislation and codes of practice, I will become a professional and effective teacher. The Institute for Learning introduced a Code of Professional Practice in 2008 to cover activities of teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector which I will adhere to. The Code is based upon seven behaviours, namely professional integrity, respect, reasonable care,

professional practice, criminal offence disclosure, responsibility during Institute investigations and responsibility.
