Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Imagine a mother going to the baby’s room to kiss her infant good night, expecting to hear the gentle breathing of her infant, but all she hears is silence.
Unrecognizable and often misunderstood, this silent killer is the foremost cause of death of infants in the United States. The deaths of infants each year from sudden infant death syndrome are greater than the number of deaths from; AIDS, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, heart disease, cancer, and muscular dystrophy combined (Bergman 24).

Sharing of experiences that such deaths are not unique provides needed support to the families. The organizations are non-profit, and free of any charges. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is neither biased nor prejudiced. Families of all races, cultural backgrounds and social classes, are attacked by this silent baby killer without warning. Parents live with this cruel and arbitrary fear. Physicians cannot predict that anything is wrong with the infant, no warning signs pre-empt the infant’s death. This paper has provided the various characteristics of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and outlined the disorder. No conclusions were stated, because there are none. Scientists and researchers are still seeking desperately to find answers to this mysterious, and treacherous silent killer. Clearly, the public needs more knowledge of SIDS, and hopefully someday, the causes and prevention of this terrible tragedy will be determined by more than theories.
