Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a tragic death of an infant under the age of 12 months. Sometimes the parents are left with no explanation of what happened and there was no way to prevent it. It is very important to teach the parent precautions to take to reduce the risk of SIDS. Sudden infant death syndrome is the unexplained death of an infant, and although there is sometimes no way to prevent it, there are some protective measures that can be taken. When a parent is educated on this they are more prepared to provide the appropriate care for their infants. The way that an infant sleeps is very important because sharing a bed with an infant puts them at a very high risk for death due to suffocation. Infants are very fragile and are unable to defend themselves or move out of the way when their faces become covered and it’s hard to breathe. This is why it is important for them to have their own bed and for that bed to be in the same room as the parents. This allows protection and the parents can remain close to the infant to continue to monitor
