Successful Relationships and Short Stories

A successful relationship is the Holy Grail in life for most people. We are constantly searching and striving to attain that bond with someone with out fully understanding the components involved in making it happen. In a time of serial monogamy, marriage drive thrus, and quickie divorces, we don't have much incentive to invest that sort of time. Relationships are easy to get out of.
But in order to have a successful relationship, both parties must first actively communicate their intentions of what they are hoping to gain from the relationship, concerns, and hopes for themselves as individuals and as a collective. Failure to do this would surely be the demise of any relationship.

There are many instances in the short stories in which I have read where two characters are unable to grasp the concept in which I am putting forth. A prime example would be Miss Dent and Mr. Blake from John Cheever's "The Five-
Forty-Eight." In this story, Miss Dent and Mr. Blake start with a working relationship which escalates into a one night stand. Neither character has communicated what their intentions or hopes for this encounter is. Miss Dent is coming from the angle that she cares for this person, and would like something more from this affair. She articulates this to him later saying "All I wanted was a little love." Had she addressed this in the beginning, it would have been clear what her hopes were for this relationship. Mr. Blake however was coming from the exact opposite angle: "She gave him a drink and said that she was going to put on something more comfortable. He urged her to; that was he came for."
If these people were openly communicating their intentions to each other would have been clear therefore enabling them to make an informed decision.

Another example of a successful relationship from the short stories I have read is character Nanapush and his young friend Eli from Louise Edrich's
"Matchimanito."

Some of these strengths I had previously recognized as a strength, but a few were a surprise to me. Growing up, I was always a competitive person. I enjoyed the thrill of winning, whether it be in a team effort or individual effort. Also, I have always wanted to achieve great things in both my personal and professional life. I believe that I have always been great at communicating with others and love to include others in everything that I do to achieve a goal. The biggest strength of mine that surprised me most was Harmony. However, after reading about each strength, I know how I have utilized…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

I am writing this quick letter to introduce myself and tell you a bit about my accomplishments and aspirations as a writer. I won't say that writing is in my blood or my genes or anything like that, but I will say that I do have an insatiable urge to write. I cannot say, but I definitely feel that writing is a passion of mine that I greatly enjoy. It is an urge that can only be satisfied and, even then, only temporarily, by stringing words together into a narrative. Ultimately, I greatly enjoy writing, although I do not consider myself to be stellar at it; I would call it a passion more than anything else.…

While rummaging through an old box of home videos, I come across one with a blank title. Out of curiosity, I pop it into my VCR player to see what this mysterious tape holds. As the blue screen turns to color, in the middle of the screen, a pink CD player pumps out Beyonce’s voice. My parents’ amateur camera-work pans up and my best friend Kendall and I dance to one of her latest hits, “All the Single Ladies”. As I try to keep up with Kendall’s quick moves, she laughs at my 8 year old attempt at swaying my hips. My little brother cheers on Kendall, who’s moves seemed more like a 16 year old hip-hop dancer.…

She was walking home after a big trigonometry test, which in her head had not gone well at all, even though she had spent hours and hours, preparing for it. When I think about it, her thoughts cannot be entirely trusted, as she was highly competitive and ambitious, and even though she was only 16, she knew exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Who was she though? Her name was Annie Wan and her plan was to have a 4.0 GPA, get a perfect SAT score and move out. She put a lot of thought into it, you might say, but if you knew what kind of life she was forced to accept, how every single day of her existence was a struggle,…

My love for writing is similar to my love of swimming. I put all my love and sweat into writing as well as into swimming back and forth down the lanes in the pool. Some days, I feel like a fish swishing through the water, while other days I feel like a dense blob that is about to drown. However, no matter how productive my swim or writing is, when I get out of the pool, I am physically at the same place as I started and I feel that I have not made much progress. However, once I look back at my work, I see how much stronger I have become and the skills and techniques I have developed.…

And when you think about it, most love stories start that way. Every moment leading up to the one in which you meet your future husband or wife somehow shapes you and prepares you for that person you were fated for. Any previous heartbreaks or dark days or lonely nights can be crucially important in the grand scheme of things—sometimes we need to know what something feels like when it’s wrong before we can ever really know it when another thing is RIGHT.…

Novels are superfluous while short stories strive for flawlessness, ensuring meticulously picked details and succinct plots. The short story utilizes the complex and vivid words the English language has to offer, painting pictures in the minds of the reader, while the novel overwhelms the reader with redundant and arbitrarily picked language. Steven Millhauser says that Short stories illustrate the message or meaning that they want to portray to the reader in a stimulating way, guaranteeing conciseness. The reason short stories are not just called short novels is: short stories are easier to fathom as well as more interesting to read , due to their concentrated plot, their explosive language, and their hidden meanings.…
