SUCCESS STORY OF AIRASIA

The business world is a tough one. Unless one is lucky enough to establish itself in the market that has very few competitors, every business usually have a very rough time. And in today's scenario, where there is high level of competition not only on the local, regional, and national front, but also from global enterprises, the business world has become a place where it is difficult to even get by.

The airline industry too is one of the toughest and most challenging in the world today, and has been so for last couple of decades, ever since the winds of globalization started blowing all over the globe. It was always a difficult task for an airline to establish itself in a competitive market and Air Asia too faced the same hurdles that many other airlines faced. The difference however, is that Air Asia managed to rise above its initial setbacks and is today one of the most influential and successful airlines in Asia as well as the global aviation sector. The airline was founded in the year 1993 and the first flight of Air Asia took to the skies in November 1996. Within a few years, the airline was heavily in debt and there was talk that the airline would have to wrap up its operations and say goodbye to the aviation sector forever. In the year 2001 however, Tony Fernandes, the business honcho known for his shrewd business skills took an interest in the airline and his company Tune Air Sdn Bhd finally took over the same year at a token amount of just 1 ringgit. At that time, a debt of USD 11 million was staring in the face of the airline and only a miracle could save it.

The miracle was Tony Fernandes and his efficient management and operational executives. After the takeover, Air Asia developed a new strategy to attract customer by offering flights at fares as less as MYR 1. It initially operated in Malaysia and currently operates in over 25 countries (Ricart and Wang 2005). It began operations in October 1996, operating out of Kuala Lumpur as its central location (Ricart and Wang 2005). The airline was bought by Tune Air in 2001 for one ringgit, the equivalent of 0.26 US cents, at a time when the company had $10.5 million debt (Ahmad 2010). Tune Air comprised of three initial Malaysian investors, Tony Fernandes and Connor McCarthy (Ricart and Wang 2005). With Fernandes, a former Time Warner executive, at the helm, and McCarthy, RyanAir’s former director of operations, the business almost immediately eradicated the debt with ambitious CEO, Fernandes, implementing aggressive low cost systems throughout the organisation(Ricart and Wang 2005). In October 2004, AirAsia attracted over $200US million in capital through an initial public offer (IPO) in shares (Ahmad and Neal 2006). In 2009, a year when most airlines made considerable losses due to the financial crisis, AirAsia posted a profit of $161.1US million, highlighting their ability to perform in testing market conditions (Unknown 2010). In 2009 they also finally negotiated with Sydney Airport to begin flights with initial costs to be offset by moving into the cargo carrying market (Bruce 2009). The low cost structure of Air Asia is entrenched in the organisation in their mission statement, which is to “To continue to be the lowest cost short-haul airline in every market we serve, delivering strong organic growth through offering the lowest airfares at a profit” (AirAsia 2011), and their vision statement “To be the largest low cost airline in Asia and serving the 3 billion people who are currently underserved with poor connectivity and high fares” (AirAsia 2011).. Bhd. for the token sum of one ringgit (about USD 0.26 at the time) with USD 11 million (MYR 40 million) worth of debts. Fernandes turned the company around, producing a profit in 2002 and launching new routes from its hub in Kuala Lumpur, undercutting former monopoly operator Malaysia Airlines with promotional fares as low as MYR 1 (USD 0.27). In 2003, AirAsia opened a second hub at Senai International Airport in Johor Bahru near Singapore and launched its first international flight to Bangkok.     Tony Fernandes was born on 30 April 1964 in Kuala Lumpur to an Indian father who was originally from Chennai, India and a Christian Eurasian mother of mixed Portuguese and Malaccan descent. Mahathir felt that the needs of the Government and Fernandes’ ambition were deemed to be suitable and a good match at the time. Fernandes had reinvented and remodeled AirAsia based on the highly successful Irish budget airline, Ryannair. It targeted millions of Asians who had never flown and wanted inexpensive basic transportation, fitting well with its slogan of “Now everyone can fly”.
