Success Is Counted Sweetest
Success is Counted Sweetest (112) by Emily Dickinson, is based of the idea that humans in general always seem to wish for things that they don’t have. The first stanza states that “Success is counted sweetest / By those who ne’er succeed”. Success is placed at a higher value who know how horrible it is to lose, but not appreciated by those who have won.
The second stanza gives an example of the main theme of the poem. The “purple Host” that is being referred to is an army. The narrator explains that the army is unable to define “victory” because they are unaware of how loss feels. The soldiers cannot fully comprehend how great their victory was, because they aren’t aware of the devastation they would feel at their loss.
