Summary
According to the text, Basic Marketing by William Perreault, et al, the retail life cycle consists of the Introduction, Growth, Maturity, and Sales Decline Stages. As suggested by the text, management would need to find that niche that would draw customers locally, and in the neighboring communities. In the retail business industry, retailers have to be creative in providing value for its customers. Customer value is a priority and must be implemented at all times when maintaining or running a business, company, and/or organization. Customers like convenience without having to jump through hoops. For example, when opening a new business, or establishing a way to build customer volume, it is necessary to research the areas where a high volume of people do their shopping and/or other activities. Also, it may be a good idea to research, and obtain information on other businesses in the surrounding areas; pertaining to the length of time they’ve been in business. In addition, knowing what types of merchandise sold can also help with determining what type of business to open.…

David Guterson’s narrative about the Mall of America delves into several facets that are embedded throughout the mall both physically and mentally. A vivid description about the mall’s interior design makes the audience feel like they have visited the mall. Guterson also writes about how people, individually and as a society, are effected psychologically by this pseudo-metropolis. The grandeur of the mall is, without question, second to none. Shoppers are drawn to visit because of all the modern frills contained within. A theme park, arcade, hundreds of shops, and eateries are the staples of the mall, but the gardens, flowers, and trees define the mall as being “the best of the best.” The atmosphere created by combining “Mother Earth” with…

The article I have chosen is one about Walmart and the opening of their new convenience stores around the US. I found this article quite interesting and thought it showed very much where the retail industry is heading, a more uniform retail environment, especially in a market like grocery stores. This article also gives a strong example of retail strategy and location as well as illustrating the effect these multinational retailers are having on the smaller independent retailers. To best evaluate this article we need to discuss the relevant retail marketing concepts, models and theories that are present.…
