The Hidden Messages
Have you ever wondered why you have random urges to do things or feel an out of place emotion? Why you would have a sudden urge to eat, sleep, or do something you normally wouldn’t do? This could possibly be subliminal messaging. Subliminal messaging is when your mind picks up things you would not notice through the conscious mind but through the unconscious. The conscious mind is all the information that we are aware that is being stored in our minds. Such as all the memories that you remember. (Cherry.) The unconscious mind is much more vast, it picks up what our eyes sees but don’t register it right away. (Cherry.) Sigmund Freud compares it to a glacier you see the very tip of it and that is the conscious mind but the much larger part of the glacier is submerged under the water that is the unconscious mind. (Mcleod.) These messages you pick up with your unconscious mind are called subliminal stimuli. Stimuli are things around us that we would pick up with our senses. Subliminal messages are most commonly seen in advertisement but it can be found in many other places such as music, movies, and even books. They all have a goal that they try to make their audience reach. An emotion, an idea, or even a standing point on a topic. Subliminal messaging is a way for the user of these messages to get a target to do what they want. To get them to follow down the path they chose.
There are many types of subliminal messaging, a commonly used one is back masking. It is the process of having a song or phrase played backwards to reveal an alternative message form what the song was intended for play forwards. Some popular artists such Pink Floyd and Weird Al have used back masking to hide secret messages in their songs. Back masking can be used to get listener to think they want to use drugs like marijuana such as Queens “Another one bites the dust”. (Cruez.)Another popular belief is that back

Crisp makes a credible argument that the Pongo Peach and Grecian Formula 16 ads were guilty of overriding the consumers' autonomy because they deceived the consumer by leading them to believe that the products were better than what they were. They used the consumer’s insecurities about themselves to make their products more appealing, causing the consumer to act on desires, rather than rationality. The problem with this type of advertising is that when people take a chance on something based on impulse, rather than facts. They risk their autonomy, which makes them want to purchase the product. I believe that Crisp’s rebuttal of Arrington’s four notions is valid. Autonomous desire is the first desire and fulfills the second desire, which is rational desire and choice. Free choice is the third desire, and finally, the fourth desire is control or manipulation. When it comes to the morality of “subliminal” advertising, my opinion is that it is simply business, and if business are going to profit, they have to use whatever tactic necessary to sell their product.…

Ever since the late 60s when the Beatles first experimented with a recording technique known as Backward Masking, people have had a fascination with recordings played backwards. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, religious fundamentalists preached from the pulpits that occult forces were hiding sinister backwards messages in rock and roll records. In the early 90s their cries reached the US courts when the rock group, Judas Priest was sued by distraught parents whose teenage sons had committed suicide while listening to their album, Stained Class. They claimed the album contained subliminal backward messages that encouraged suicidal behavior. Judas Priest prevailed in the case with the court ruling they had not intentionally…

Triggering the Hidden Part of the Human Subconscious Through Inanimate Objects Many individuals fear where the line between sanity and insanity blur together as an amount of trauma creates hallucinations in the subconscious. During humanity’s earlier days, mental illness could not be determined by a physical diagnosis. The concept of how a sane person can turn insane brings wonders, yet curiosity into the subconscious. These possibilities were expressed through the works of literature where little to no knowledge could burst into bountiful amounts on the subject of insanity.…

Subliminal Perception is message that people tend to get unconsciously below the level of threshold. A threshold is the level at which you are aware of stimuli, so if something is below the threshold, or subliminal, you are not conscious. Therefore, whatever messages you are receiving might be stored on some part of your brain and you obey them without even realizing it! Generally subliminal perception occurs whenever stimuli presented below the threshold or limen for awareness is found to influence thought feeling and action. (Merikle, 2000). Do marketers intentionally hide the subliminal messages through conscious perception? Subliminal messages are those messages that we subconsciously see them while consciously ignore them. Most of the subliminal messages that advertisers use are related to sex as we are usually encouraged to repress our questions about sex, often to the harm of personal relationships. Advertisers know this and so they use this sort of…

Not all the things showed in advertising or movies are able to see at first appearance. For example: in Nolan’s Batman trilogy is possible to see products or stores of specific brands like Sacks Fifth Avenue, Nokia, Under Armour and many more. Knowing this, it is not very hard to believe that, according to University College London, an average person in United States is exposed to 2 million of advertising impacts in his life, as Science Daily cited. How can it be possible? It is possible through subliminal messages. The term is very famous but not a lot of people know about it, then it will be explained what is it and how it was and is still used in advertising and movies.…

Pratkanis and Greenwald identify four types of subliminal stimuli: (1) sub threshold stimuli, which are presented at energy levels that are too weak to be detected by the audience (e.g., flashing the words “Eat popcorn” onto a screen so quickly that the audience is not aware of them), (2) masked stimuli, which are hidden from the audience by the presentation of some other, overriding stimuli (e.g., briefly presenting the stimulus immediately followed by a bright flash of light), (3) unattended stimuli, which are presented in such a way that the embedded figure is unlikely to be segregated from its figural context (e.g., hiding the figure of a naked body in the curves and lines of a picture of an ice cube), (4) figurally transformed stimuli, which are words or pictures blurred or distorted to the point that they are unrecognizable (e.g., commands recorded backward and inserted into popular music). (Pratkanis, A. R. (1992). The cargo-cult science of subliminal persuasion. The Skeptical Inquirer, 16(3), 260-272.)…

As a child, were you intrigued by the idea of sending a secret message to your best friend? Perhaps you were fascinated by the thought of using an invisible ink pen. If so, then I suggest learning about steganography. According to the online Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of steganography is the art or practice of concealing a message, image, or file within another message, image, or file (Merriam-Webster, 2011). Freud believed that the unconscious mind determines much of our behaviour and that we are motivated by unconscious emotional drives. Freud believed that the unconscious contains unresolved conflicts and has a powerful effect on our behaviour and experience. He argued that many of these conflicts will show up in our fantasies and dreams, but the conflicts are so threatening that they appear in disguised forms, in the shape of symbols.…
