Stuyvesant Fashion Personal Statement
While New York City’s zeitgeist instilled an appreciation for high-end fashion’s influence on the world’s perceptions of individuals, it was the Fashion Institute of Technology’s cutting-edge classes that turned my junior year entrepreneurial interests into a school based philanthropic business: Stuyvesant Fashion (SF) - a rapidly developed, school-wide enterprise that markets and sells exclusive student-designed clothing with profits directly transferred to a Stuyvesant fund for individual student’s needs (books, gear, fees, etc.).

SF’s mission is twofold. First, to enable students to both acquire practical entrepreneurial experience while creating a college art portfolio by designing saleable Stuyvesant seasonal clothing exclusively for students/alumni and their activities. Secondly, earmarked profits sustain a students’ needs fund as close to 50% of the student body lives at or below the NYC poverty level. While a sustainable fundraising entity had been my goal, SF has provided a realistic platform to practice what I learned in Babson College’s entrepreneurial training program.

Truthfully, exploring design idea flashes staved off the demands of many senior year realities. Fabricating products with friends, I willingly took on daunting business commitments and responsibilities, enjoying concentrating on formidable tasks, oblivious of issue ramifications, dreaming I knew what I was doing.     To my delight, I came to find that there was a relatively small yet dedicated niche to unconventional streetwear. The mere proposition of a group young people who shared the same passion encouraged me to use my designs for a legitimate business. Lundin, Ph.D. Steve Lundin, “The Big Tuna Ph.D.,” is best known as the author of the multimillion-copy, best-selling FISH! books. He has also been a working creative (a writer and filmmaker) and a student of innovation and creativity for more than 40 years. He has studied with Tony Buzan, originator of Mind Mapping®; Dr. Edward Debono, the man who conceptualized lateral thinking; and the creative business poet David Whyte. Steve is also the former director of the Institute for Innovation and Creativity at the University of St. Thomas.
