Schools of Magic

All magic in the world of Legynds is grouped into schools. Each School is linked by a theme; something that school excels and specializes in. Some Schools are broadly similar, or have spells within them that closely duplicate the effects of other Schools’ spells, but each School is unique.

Lists

Aside from the spells and effects a School enables a student to study, a School also shapes the course of study the student will pursue as he or she branches out into other Schools. All beginning Mages select a single school as their first ‘List’. This first School, or List, is the mage’s starting point for his or her further study of Magic in the world of Legynds. The three schools in the center of the Magic Diagram are called the Inner Lists. The six schools that form a ring which connect to these are called the Outer Lists.

Laws of Magic

Laws of Magic are powerful lists that represents broad magical concepts fundamental to the workings of Mythir. The spells and abilities available to Mage characters that attain proficiency in Magical Laws are individually more powerful than those of other Magical Schools. All Laws of Magic are ‘supported’ by, or connected to, the lesser Schools through The Magic Diagram. To Learn a Law of Magic, a mage need only to have knowledge in one of the two supporting Schools for that Magical Law. Once a character has begun study of a Magical Law, no other Law of Magic may also be studied as the mixture of the Laws of Magic have been known to be very dangerous. To begin learning spells in a second Law of Magic may only be done with a Circle of Arcane Binding Ritual. (See Rituals text)

Since law is a broad area of our governmental system, it can be broken down to several classifications to better understand each of them. Perhaps the most important one is Criminal and Civil Law. Criminal Laws are the laws that cover criminal activities such as robbery, murder, kidnapping etc. This is usually between an individual or a group of individuals against society. Civil Law is mort focused on two private parties. The most common type of civil law would be divorces and custody battles. These laws are our underlying written…

The teaching style of these schools is relaxed but structured; the teachers expect the very best of students but give free reign. It is geared towards project based learning styles, where the children are given a task and a direction in which to go but they can choose the way they go about it. This provides the children with their own thinking skills, through trial and error, on how to get things done and to do them right to the best standards. Children from this class are the law makers, and the people the other two groups strive to become. Through this education, a life of gratification and indulgence comes into…

People exploring new experiences will have to overcome many challenges, and will undergo personal growth. ‘Into the World’ can be interpreted as outlooks of growing up and adjustment into new stages of a person’s life. It can mean changing normally, or having to change without any choice in the matter. In either case, any person exploring new experiences will encounter challenges, but along the way they will undergo personal growth. This is apparent in the prescribed text, ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’ by JC Burke, as well as my chosen text, ‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan. The idea of ‘new experiences’ may not always begin positively. For instance, in Burke’s novel, ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’, one disastrous accident made him and his family to leave their hometown of Mumbilli, forcing every character to go through an emotional release. This provokes Tom to become very reserved and distant as he grows resentful and bitter of the whole predicament and progressively being pushed “back into that big, black hole”. He becomes very depressed, reclusive and alienated as he attempts to deal with the situation that his brother, Daniel, has caused. The author projects Tom’s thoughts, emotions, perceptions and opinions through a large range of techniques. The audience is aware of Tom’s growing guilt through the technique of first person writing (on page 124). “Like I said, that was a low point.” The believable, grammatical, impressionistic voice of the teenage narrator creates a confidential relationship with the readers, as well as keeping them engaged. It also gives us insight into Tom’s inner most thoughts. As Tom plunges into intense feelings of guilt and animosity, he becomes numb to the struggles the other members of his family are facing. One of the most effective and engaging techniques used by the author to capture the reader’s attention, is the use of flashbacks. The Story of Tom Brennan is a nonlinear narrative, and this is first evident in the prologue, which has a…
