I’ve been told by counselors and even family members, that studying abroad is too much of a luxury to afford at this point in time. For a while, even I began to believe in the unfair lie that because of my financial situation, studying abroad is essentially impossible. I struggled with the decision to study abroad; “What If I don’t have enough money to pay for the program, or even sustain myself while abroad? Should I use the money I have for something more feasible? What if money is the reason I’m forced miss out on this experience?” I’ve made up my mind, however, to live life to the fullest and face every challenge head on. Studying abroad is an investment that I am confident will supply me with a life time of benefits. The funding provided by the Gilman Scholarship will both help with the program cost, as well as transportation to the host country. I would like to be one of the exchange students because I want to travel to another country. But besides that, I want to develop myself. By being an exchange student, I believe I will confront with challenges that I never faced before; adapting in a new place, new environment, new culture, and new friends. It seems utterly frightening but I believe by all these difficulties, it can teach me countless lessons of life. I also want to develop my communication skills. I am a very shy person, hence I hope that I can break my shy-shell when I become an exchange student. Other than that, I also want to improve my English speaking skills. As I always being surrounded by my Malay friends, the probability for me to speak in English is too low because I think that I have Malay language to talk to them. But if I am around foreigners, I have to talk in English no matter what because English is an international language. I think this will improve my speaking and also my level of confidence. Besides, it also can give me greater awareness of my own national identity. It also will allow me to widen my perspective and become self-sufficient. By being an exchange student I will meet new friends from all around the world. It is incredible to see hordes of people from numerous foreign regions interacting with one another, forming friendships and promoting cultural understanding. I can build of my interpersonal skills that will help me greatly in the future as I can communicate easily with anyone. Being an exchange student is much like becoming a small child once again, and this provides the opportunity to become familiar with the language in the manner of a native speaker – although one may not always perfect the language before the end of their time within their host country, most individuals will find that they have become conversationally fluent if on a long-term exchange. Even short-term exchanges will make a significant difference in the student’s comprehension of the language of…

One of the strengths of traveling in Korea is the extensive network of transportation. There are buses, taxis, trains, and subways throughout the whole country. I believe the Seoul subway system is one of the most developed in the whole. This easy accessible transportation makes it easy for travelers to get from one place to another. These forms of transportations are easy to use and quick to find. You will see a street sign almost everywhere you go. Street signs are on almost every block which prevents travelers from getting lost. Another strength of visiting Korea are the cheap prices. Transportation, food, and lodging are all at reasonable prices. In my opinion, the biggest strength of traveling in Korea is the beautiful scenery. While you travel place to place the scenery is always there. Everywhere you look you will see the vast variety of vegetation and peaceful environment.…

Engineering is a very important part of our society, both now and in the past. It is a major that opens a wide variety of career opportunities for you after college. Engineering is what keeps our nation moving and up to date with technology. It is a very strong appealing major in college due to the amount of average income, and also it appeals to many individuals likes in a career. It has the highest paying income straight out of college, and that increase in pay usually does not stop, it just keeps increasing. Another appealing aspect of a career in engineering is the possibility to work for a foreign company, and no matter where you live in the United States, your income never decreases due to the other local income. It is a rewarding career, both financially and mentally. This is one of those careers that you feel a great deal of self-worth after completing an assignment, or creating something new and improved to keep up with technology. It is a major that requires more time and effort than most other majors. You need to apply yourself or you will just fall behind and most likely just drop the major all together. Whether you choose general engineering or a more difficult division such as mechanical or aerospace, your major is the most difficult one you can choose. I recently interviewed Jack Byrd, an engineering professor at West Virginia University, on Mechanical Engineering. The interview detailed the importance of engineering and the process he went through to be where he is today. This interview would be an insight to anyone who has the slightest interest in engineering or becoming an engineer and what it takes to become a successful engineer.…
