|A Reflection on My Study Habits |
|By Greg Bosch |

I have noticed during my time that I have spent studying lately that I have become pretty methodical. I have found in the essential guide to effective studying that I have a few habits that match my own. I know that I am, and always will be, a procrastinator. Yet I have always tried to study during my “best” time of day, which was always during the nocturnal hours for some reason. I have always been a night person, and I have actually incorporated that into my military career also by volunteering for the over-night positions, especially during deployments. I found that there are less likely to be distractions for me during that time, and I have a chance to work at my own pace. I have also figured out that I always try to do the most difficult tasks first. That way, I do not have to worry about them later.

I know that there are some things that I would like to add to my habits that would benefit me better. One of them would be trying to partake in active studying. I enjoy working with other people that are in the same situation that I am, and it is always good to take notes for everything that you do. I believe that I could integrate this by contacting some of my classmates and trying to set up a meeting or chat time with them outside of school. The second one would have to be trying to break large tasks into smaller pieces. I know that would help on my being a procrastinator, and

    3. Create a designated study time, and stick to it. I plan to implement an hour of study time each morning and actually hold to it. If I set aside time and it is a part of my daily routine I can avoid all nighters the day before the exam and feel better prepared for whatever it is I will be doing that day in school.…

It is also a struggle to get back into good study habits. One sometimes finds it more fun to play with their children rather than study. Allow 20 minutes a day to study. Keeping a written daily schedule on a pocket calendar is a good way to stay on task. Another way to develop good study habits is to write homework down. Also write down when tests are due on the calendar. When you check your emails, also check the calendar daily. I am a hopeless procrastinator. I don’t start homework until its due, if at all. That used to be okay when I was in high school. I was able to work, go to school, participate in a plethora of extra-curricular activities, and date, all while maintaining an above 3.0 GPA. It's just a really bad habit that I've never actually taken the time to fix. When I was in high school I loved succeeding, but I never had to really work for it. It just came to me naturally. I've gotten to college and while none of the material is really complicated to me I just don't have the interest for it. I have terrible time management skills. I don’t keep up with important dates and the dates I do remember I put off until the last minute.…

“Heather, you should go write your essays or study for your exams now!” “Don’t worry, I will do them later!” That is the daily conversation you will often hear around the house between my parents and me. The conversation generally begins the day the assignments are provided and two weeks before each exam week, but the “do it” part does not occur until the night before the due date. On nights before each due date, the confident and carefree Heather that once said “don’t worry” can be seen struggling to keep her eyes open at 4:00 am in the morning while shoving a textbook of information into her head. As much as I detest it, I am the “pro” in procrastinate, and the laziness in me embraces the motto “if tomorrow is not the due date, today is not the do-date.” Procrastination, the act of delaying an action, is real and happening around the world.…

With regard to college, a top priority of mine is to achieve high grades in order to make the dean’s list here at Bryant University. In order to do so, I know that I must alter my High School studying stills into productive habits. For example, instead of procrastinating finishing my calculus homework because it isn’t due until the end of the week, I will strive to discipline myself in order to complete my school work ahead of time, decreasing stress and being a more efficient student overall.…

For a long time procrastination was my vice and I certainly was guilty of it. Starting in the 6th grade, I always did my homework at the last possible minute and never scheduled my time well or at all for that matter. Inevitably soon enough, my grades started slipping as proven by my first progress report. That was when I realized that I have to proactively do something, slacking was just not going to cut it. At ACLC, there were no teachers chastising you if you didn’t do your work, you were your own responsibility, the message was something like…welcome to the real world. After much trial and error, I decided the next year to use my planner that I each learner received every year. That helped me immensely, and I always hated the idea of planning until I learned that sometimes it’s completely necessary. From that small but significant epiphany, I learned one of the most difficult concepts: time management. I now use my planner everyday and have never missed an assignment. This has really prepared me for college because there isn’t anyone who will make you do anything, you have to fight temptations and put your priorities in order, just as I did during my seven years at ACLC. I discovered that you ultimately are your own responsibility; you always have a choice whatever one you choose in the end is entirely up to you. You can sit on your bum and do nothing or you…
