The movie The Antwone Fisher Story deals with the life of a young African-American man who suffered a troubled upbringing and his struggle as an adult to cope with what he went through. Since he was a victim of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse in his childhood by foster caretakers, it is safe to say he suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, seen through his recurring flashbacks of the abuse; his violent outbursts as a way to cope with his tragic life, and low self-esteem due to not ever received words of encouragement from his caretakers. These behaviors are clearly abnormal because they are not what a typical young adult would show. Because Antwone Fisher did not meet his parents, grew up with violent foster caretakers, and never received support from anyone who cared for him, he was not able to develop coping skills necessary to confront life’s struggles. He definitely acted impulsively when he felt attacked by others who belittled him, through his anger outbursts. Despite the many attacks he suffered he only acted on them, when he felt he could not take it anymore; after having bottled them up inside.…

Once aboard ship, he is directly involved in a fight and is sent to see a Navy psychiatrist, Dr. Jerome Davenport. Antwone’s reluctance to talk to Dr. Davenport during the initial visit, results in Dr. Davenport informing Antwone that his first session doesn’t start until he begins to talk and that there will only be a total of three sessions. Eventually, the two develop a working relationship that evolves into something more meaningful as Antwone begins to open up and talk about his past.…

Though I scored higher in Musical/Rhythmic, my preferred learning style is intrapersonal which was my second highest score. The major characteristics of my preferred learning style are learning best when working alone and only depending on oneself to to get things done. The learning style I scored highest in musical/rhythmic describes my personal preferences, but does not apply to my academic and professional preferences. Academically and professional my learning style of intrapersonal describes me more accurately. After being given instructions either verbally or I writing, I prefer to work alone to get the task or tasks completed. The three study strategies that I have chosen are Recite, Rehearse, and Write, Study during short, frequent sessions, and using flash cards. Recite, Rehearse and write is a way of learning the material by respectively reviewing it repetitively. Study during short, frequent sessions is a way to gain the knowledge by reviewing the material in short intervals, leaving it for a short period of time and then returning to go over it again. Using Flash cards is a process that uses visual cues to help the intake of information that you are studying.…

During the course of a college education, students are inundated with an enormous amount of information. Finding a way to wade through all that information and figure out what is important and what is insignificant is essential to being successful in college. One of the ways that students can achieve this goal is through efficient note-taking. Taking notes helps to gain a better understanding of the concepts being discussed and helps retain the information being presented (O’Hara, 2005, p. 64). There are several strategies that when employed will greatly improve note-taking skills.…

The three study strategies that I chose are SQ3R, using flash cards and A.S.P.I.R.E. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. First survey, or skim over the assignment, paying close attention to chapter headings, bold type, charts and summary. Next, question what is needed to understand and complete the assignment. Ask questions based on the preview of the assignment. Read and highlight important information and answer the questions. Recite answers to the questions and make notes. Review the material and questions frequently. I found that this method is almost identical to the PQRST method, which stands for Preview, Question, Read, Summarize and Test. I think I already use some of the steps in the SQ3R method. I have a tendency to skip over the reciting part of this method, which is shocking, considering my learning style is verbal. Flash cards are amazing!!! I can remember using flash cards back in grade school, all the way through high school. I even used flash cards in cosmetology school to learn the different nail diseases. I found it slightly more effective to have another person test me with the flash cards, rather than testing myself. With a verbal learning style, saying things out loud definitely helps me remember. I was doing some research online at studygs.net/aspire.html and found a study strategy called A.S.P.I.R.E.…
