Values and Moral Development

Values and Moral Development The society in today’s world is constantly saying that the current youth has a lack in morals and values. (Helms, 1974) Many feel that this is happening due to the lack of religious rearing. While others believe that it steems from wearing down of family life, transormation of techonology, intricacy of ecological issues, and/or from future shock. According to Ronald G. Helms we look to educators for guidance and advice, better to educate our students with morals and values. “Educators must face this situation and accept their responsibility for provideing a method of early moral development.” (Helms, 1974)
Define
According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, the definition for moral is the following: “a : of or relating to principles of right and wrong in behavior : ethical b : expressing or teaching a conception of right behavior c : conforming to a standard of right behavior d : sanctioned by or operative on one 's conscience or ethical judgment e : capable of right and wrong action ” (Moral, updated) The baisic definition for value judgement is a individual view about how good or bad something or someone is. There are three characteristics of morality that are: self-assessment, intentional struggle to improper thinking and actions, and moral way of thinking. (Sunal & Haas, 2011) Conflict arises when there is a difference in beliefs of what is correct moral behavior. An example would be someone from other counties and/or religious beliefs may think it is okay to treat women badly and in the United States it is not okay.
Concepts
The concept is the idea of what something is and/or how it works. With values and moral development it is that educators are expected to help students learn to decipher right from wrong, good from bad in the real world. Piaget’s theory

Piaget believed that children develop morality through a series of stages and conducted an experiment using marbles with children.
