Structuring Gifted Programs

If I had to pick the most important model from the Structuring Gifted Programs figure in chapter eleven, I would have to choose Individualized Instruction. This model breaks down instructions for assignments in a manner that is unique to an individual’s understanding. If a student does not understand the instructions, the teacher will personally come to the student and explain the instructions to him/her. Or, the teacher could possibly already be aware of the students who are gifted and incorporate special instructions for the gifted students. A regular lesson plan may not be challenging enough for a student who is gifted. I personally have a problem

Breaking down instructions individually is extremely important because it helps to determine what kind of student you are dealing with. Take myself for example, on our first assignment I did not find all of the instruction, therefore, the assignment that I turned in was not the best that it could have been. However, once I was provided a second chance, and I fully understood the instruction, I was able to give one hundred percent to the assignment, and earned a grade of ninety six percent. Had I not had the opportunity to go back and really understand the instructions, I would have probably received a “C” for that assignment. Properly understanding instructions play a major part in a student’s performance, and Individualized Instruction can be a big help with this …show more content…
Once students began to socialize and find a place where they feel like they fit in, they began to become more confident and self assured. I speak from experience. I was lost at one point and really felt like I did not belong. I then started to hang out with people who were more like me and had some of the same beliefs and values that I possessed. Before I knew it, I was not as shy, I noticed that I walked with my head held high, and I became a social butterfly. When I think back about five years ago, I was nothing like I am now, and I have my cluster of friends to thank for

Events that encourage social interaction are likely to make students feel less stressed during their transition as they feel supported by their peers and other people around them. In order to achieve meaningful academic and intellectual growth, gifted students must experience advanced curriculum content that is both discipline-specific and integrated/interdisciplinary. The content, pacing, and depth of instruction must be appropriately differentiated and should emphasize critical and creative thinking. Gifted learners should participate in a well-defined, sequential affective curriculum that revolves around personal/social awareness and understanding, social and emotional adjustment, and academic planning and career exploration. As someone coming from a school that mostly lacks school spirit and being a person who is naturally timid and quiet, going to a school with a strong community and lots of school spirit can help me finally get out of my shell and gain better social skills. Though you can do this at any school with a large social life, being around a crowd of people who look like me and share similar experiences as I do can make things easier as I…

Growing up homeschooling, I wanted to break the typical homeschool stereotype kid. I had friends, I went to camps, and I joined many events. However, I had an introvert personality. And often times my friends neglected my existence because of my silence during their conversation; they went out with their classmates from school, leaving me unaccompanied and forgotten back in the corner. At camp, I ate my lunch alone, spent free time alone, and sat in the back alone. Not because I wanted to isolate myself from people, but the circle of people pushed me out the circle whenever I tried to join a crowd. I could not fit in.…

Enabling a gifted student to learn and progress through the curriculum at an appropriate pace for them can be difficult at times. Initially, both gifted and developmentally delayed individuals should be properly assessed based on either a preliminary checklist or assessment obtained from the professionals such as developmental pediatrician or psychiatrist. Obtaining the assessment would help us discriminate or distinguish individuals that are mild moderate and severe. It also goes the same with gifted children, we need to know which are mildly gifted, moderately and highly gifted in order to be able to address their needs more appropriately. Another psychological truth that we need to learn is that most learning occurs when an optimal match between the learner’s current understanding and the challenge of new learning material has been carefully engineered. Choosing an appropriate program for…

Throughout high school I was able to develop many skills pertaining to the social aspects of college, which have really helped me. Growing up, I’ve been fortunate enough to live in a two parent, middle class home. I have never experienced death of a family member or someone close to me. I have been so lucky to have such a wonderful life. Once I started going to leadership camps, meeting kids who have had such difficulties in their lives I realized not everyone’s lives are as happy-go-lucky as mine. This has taught me to treat every individual I meet in college with compassion and kindness, as you never know what kind of life they’ve had. No one should be judged by his or her social class, friend group, how they dress, or come off in public settings. Each person has experienced some hardship in their life and thus everyone deserves their chance to show a person who they truly are. Using this mindset I have been able to make many friends in organizations such as the President’s Leadership Class in which I wouldn’t have typically met them. This predetermined view of the world has helped me graciously in college.…

I tried my best to fit in but arriving at a completely new area and having to make new friends was an extremely scary thought for me. I didn’t know anyone, I didn’t have any friends, and I felt isolated. All I wanted to do was go back to California to the familiar faces I left behind. As the year progressed, I was forced to break my shell and interact with others in my class gradually becoming more confident in myself and making new friends. The internal battles I had to endure in me becoming more social eventually taught me not to be afraid to build relationships. Learning this at an early stage was very beneficial to me because now I am not afraid to talk to complete strangers and even befriend…

Every year, students come back to school dressed in new, crisp clothes to signify the fresh start of a new year. Girls spend 2 hours on hair and makeup while guys are experimenting with new selfie poses in the mirror. These days, students are too concerned about being judged by their peers. This year, I'm finally a senior, and I still fear of being judged negatively; however, this year was different because I had confidence. I walked into school feeling genuinely happy and confident, rather than the shy scared kid I was not too long ago. Over the summer, I got a job to be a more social person. I involved myself more in the community, and it tremendously improved my ability to work as a team. Even though it may not seem like a major preparation,…
