DEFINITION OF MBI/SOE

❖ SOE – To strengthen the command of English as the mandatory language to be learned, language of communication and language of knowledge at national and international level.

Rational of soe ….

Only 25% of the SC and MT teachers – proficient.

- Only 53 – 58 % of teaching period use Eng.

- 2007, Report by Trends in Mathematics Science Study(TIMSS), 2003 – from 10th placing to 20th in MT and 20th to 21st in SC

- Researches found – students in rural schools have difficulty in ETeMS. Gaps widen.

- Researches from local Uni – improvement of English proficiency minimal – only 3%

FINDINGS

❖ At the moment, there are 92,899 English teachers in the country

❖ 29,275 are non optionist

❖ 14,302 are KPLI graduates

❖ Teachers in the rural areas need training more than those in the urban centres

Who is our target group?

• Practising English teachers

1. Non optionists/non TESL trained

2. Teaching in the Primary schools

3. (especially those) teaching Tahap 1

4. Teaching in rural areas

5. Have a credit in English

6. Have 3 years teaching experience

MANDATORY

• The same teacher attends all the phases

• In lieu of absence trs need to produce medical certs or official letters through the HMs/principals

• Certificates will be given upon completion of ALL the phases

• Interphase tasks must be completed and presented during the next phase

Training/courses needed

1) Proficiency enhancement (10,000 PRI, 4000 SEC)

2) Pedagogy courses for secondary (1600)

3) Pedagogy courses for primary (7000)

4) Training of trainers (TOT)-1200

TRAINING MODE

❖ Coordinators will go through direct training and module induction by module writers.

❖ Coordinators will induct fellow colleagues in the IPG.

❖ Cascade training (KPKI mode) for English teachers.

❖ All training will be based on modules.

❖ Selection of teachers will be done by JPN

❖ Proficiency courses will be in the IPGM premises

❖ Pedagogy courses will be carried out on site

TOT will be in hotels/govt premises

    The teacher quality of today is much weaker than what it has been in the past. In his article A New Deal For Teachers , Matthew Miller explains the demand for good teachers. He informs his readers that many teachers aren’t actually teaching because that was their desired profession, but because it was a last resort, so they don’t care as much for the students learning. Another issue of the teacher quality is salary. Miller explains that in the 1960s and 1970s school teachers were all very talented women but higher paying careers were not open to them. Now that those careers such as a doctor or a lawyer are open to anyone they are often taken over teaching because of the huge difference in salaries. The difference of a lawyer compared to teacher is around $2,000 starting out but topping out at around a difference of about $110,000. However some teachers who actually choose teaching as their top profession don’t mind the salary difference, they look at the greatness of the students to be fulfilling enough for them with the addition of free summers. An additional issue is that not many of these types of teachers are in the poorer and urban school districts. A shocking statistic was that half of the new teachers will actually quit within three years and they are usually the smarter teachers.…

    Being apart of a rural school community can have both advantages and disadvantages, it can mean that because there are fewer children within the community that there are less students in the school leading to more one on one time with the teacher so students cannot get lost in the system.
