Street Gang Crips
The ‘Crips’ are an L.A. based street gang that surfaced in 1969, this gang is said to be started by Stanley “Tookie” Williams and Raymond Washington, they chose the collective name of “Crip” because it appealed to the younger age of the members they were recruiting. This gang has been labeled as one of America’s most violent street gangs. Violence within this gang is used indiscriminately between rival gang members, to maintain order within the hierarchy of the gang, to initiate new members, and to settle personal differences. The violence used to initiate new members include being ‘jumped’ (or beat) in, initiation violence is often used to carry out violent acts, and even murder, against rival gang members to show an aspiring members loyalty.

    Gang-related crimes are one of the most discussed issues in criminal justice system. The root of gang violence could to be traced to as early as the 1900s.     The name Crib chosen by the Raymond and his peers is were the word “Crips” originates from no one knows the actual reason people start calling them that but they soon adopted the word. In the year of 1971 the Avenue Cribs started to be known around the Los Angeles area as what we call today crips. Ms-13 created by the children of Hispanic immigrants who left the civil war in El Salvador in the nineteen-eighties, their purpose of this gang was to protect themselves from rival Mexican-American gangs. Ms-13 has wide-spread from Los Angeles area throughout southern cities such as Charlotte, Durhan, and North Carolina where Hispanics are the fattest growing minority.
