1.0 Introduction
The purpose of this field exercise was to find the total discharge of the Dunk River in Newton, Prince Edward Island on November 14th 2012. Discharge is the volume of water moving down a stream or river per unit of time, commonly expressed in cubic feet per second. The up-stream and downstream cross-sections were setup using a tape measure and stakes. There were 21 cross-sections in measured intervals. A current meter was used to measure velocity at the same location as each depth measurement at each cross-section that was determined. Also used was the float-Method, a length of stream was measured, and a start and finish points were sectioned off. Then a float was used to measure how long it took to get from start line to the finish line. Water samples were also taken, and were tested for, conductivity, PH levels and Turbidity.

2.0 Materials and Methods
The methods that were used for this procedure “The Measurement of stream flow” can be referenced in the Hydrometric Field Manual – Measurement of Stream flow, Terzi 1981.
Equipment used: * Meter stick * 3 Tape measure * 4 Stakes * Rod * Current meter (Teledyne Gurley Model 1100) * Surveyors Level (Topcon Model ATF6) * 2 stopwatches * Tripod * Water sample bottle * Ph meter * Turbidity Meter * Conductivity meter

2.1 Site Description
On November 14th, 2012 stream flow measurements were taken on the Dunk River in Newton, PEI .The GPS coordinates are 63°36’40” W longitude and 46°20’28” N latitude. The water was brown and cloudy.

    According to the U.S EPA, a watershed is the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place. On our trip we were able to conduct some experiments on the water. Our group did an experiment on the pH of the river water. The pH was around 7-7.5, which according to the scale is neutral. This number means that the pH of the river water is close to the pH of tap water, but we still probably shouldn’t drink the river water without filtering it first. Another experiment we did in class after the field trip was to calculate the Biotic Index Rating of the river to figure out how polluted the water was. In order to do this we took the number of a certain species living in the water and multiplied that amount by their tolerance level (how much the species can stand pollution). That product was our Biotic Index Value. Next we divided the Biotic Index Value by the total number of organisms. This gave us our Biotic Index Rating, which for the Nashua River ( a tributary of the Merrimack River) was about 5.97. According to the scale given meant that the water quality was good, but might be slightly impaired. I went on this similar field trip in fifth grade, where I did similar experiments .
