Stray Dogs
According to the Tandridge District Council stray dogs are considered to be unattended dogs in a public place and a public place means any place to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access. There has been a steady increase in the number of stray dogs over the years in Trinidad and Tobago and internationally. This has become a major issue not only to humans but also to the environment. According to Desiderious Erasmus a philosopher who quotes “Prevention is better than cure” in his book “The Royal Road to Health”. This quote, pertaining to stray dogs, can be interpreted as taking the necessary measures of solving the problem of stray dogs so it does not become prevalent rather than having to solve the problem they pose after something negative has happened. Solve the problem of the dogs before they become a threat to life as it is known! That is why stray dogs should therefore be put to sleep.
Stray dogs pose a physical and an environmental threat to people and their surroundings. They can become feral (violent, aggressive) when left alone on the streets without proper care or training. Some incidents have been reported by international media where stray dogs have attacked and actually killed persons. One such incident was reported in the “San Antonio News” dated Wednesday January 9th, 2008 that Mark Carrasco a two year old toddler was attacked outside his home by a stray dog and was hospitalized. The biggest environmental issue is that they are not vaccinated, so they therefore present a health risk to other cats and dogs as well as human and other life. If a stray dies on the street their remains could also present a health hazard and not to mention the foul stench. Their feces carry harmful infections the most widely known being Toxcariasis. The dog, however, poses another environmental threat because they have no idea on how to salvage food for themselves; they will resort to looking through available garbage bags and cans even going to greater

There are many ways in which people tend to abuse of animals. An example is neglect, meaning that between a pet and the owner there is a “failure to provide an animal with the most basic of requirements of food, water, shelter and veterinary care” (What). Dogfighting is another example. Dogfights are events when two dogs are put inside a fighting pit and are forced to fight until the other one is dead or is too weak to fight back. The fights are brutal and the owners abandon the loosing dogs with only a couple more hours to live because of its deadly injuries or inhumanly kill the dogs themselves. The winning dog owner gets a money price. Most of the dogs that are considered to not be good enough to be entered in the pit and be victorious are used as bait to train other dogs or as breeding dogs where they are constantly exploited. All of these actions that people inflict on the animals can make them become very scared of humans, other dogs and their surroundings causing them to be very…

Every year hundreds of people within various communities are bitten by dogs. Some are bitten by wild dogs, while others are bit by domestic dogs. Each and every dog has the capability to bite a human but it appears that only one breed is being punished for it, pit bulls. The issue about the community supporting the council in prohibiting unregistered dogs for a safer community has been prominent in the media in recent years since poor Ayen Chol was brutally attacked. In the feature article ‘owners dump dangerous dogs to avoid penalties" published in the Herald sun, on the 07/09/11, by Grant McArthur and Alex White contends that pitbull are dangerous animals. In an outraged tone, the article targets pitbull owners, imposing the ideology that they should take more responsibility of their obligations.…

Once upon a time the poorest fed dog in America was the farm dog left to fend for itself for food. These dogs, undernourished bags of bones, were once so common they almost became symbolic of impoverished rural America. Today vast numbers of those small farms have vanished. With them have gone the gaunt, hollow-eyed hounds that greeted every farm visitor with a hungry, ill-tempered bark.…

“And very little is known about these free-ranging, village dogs.” His team rectified that by collecting blood samples from 549 village dogs in 38 countries across 6 continents. “I did my Ph.D. work with tropical butterflies; by comparison, working with dogs is fantastic,” he adds. “You don’t need to hunt them down with a net. You show up, you have food, there are dogs.” (http://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2015/10/genetic-study-writes-yet-another-origin-story-for-dogs/411196/) Dogs have always been considered “Mans Best Friend.” However that title has barely lived up to it’s name when there are still dogs all around the world that get abused and murdered by their owners. Dogs who get dropped off in the middle of nowhere because their owners just can’t keep up with them anymore. Dogs who are euthanized because they’ve been in the pound so long and there is no hope for them to ever be rescued, may that be because of old age or even a history of biting people. Dogs are not born monsters, humans created the idea. Dogs may hurt you because of their past experiences with lousy…

Only now have people even considered this issue in Ste. Genevieve, when this should have been thought of the entire time. “A study published in 2010 showed there were 4 times as many dog bite-related visits and 3 times as many hospital stays in rural areas than in urban areas” (Holquist 1). Recently, however, an attack occurred this past summer in Ste. Genevieve, which only now awakened precaution. The town has been having problems with all dog owners, but especially pit bull owners, in regards to keeping them contained. While it is common knowledge that keeping one’s dog contained whether it be on a leash or on the owner's property is the law, many do not abide by this law because they believe that their dog would never harm anyone. While the town considered adopting a sort of BSL law, they decided to keep the laws as they are even though it has been prove to be ineffective. People forget that when dealing with legislation regarding dogs or animals that it is a very sensitive subject and people have immense emotional attachments with their pets. THis makes it more difficult for these laws to be…

According to the “Animal legal defense fund”, “Sometimes dogs are killed because they appear to be of a dangerous breed” (Animal Legal Defense fund). “Animal Legal Defense fund” also stated, “If your dog is perceived as a dangerous breed, such as a Pit Bull or Rottweiler, the risk factor to officers and your dog increases exponentially” (Animal legal Defense fund). Although there is an agreement with both quotes, the fact that dog’s are stereotyped as “dangerous” based on their breed is wrong (Animal Legal defense fund). An example of animal cruelty was found in “Family pets: Victims of police Brutality?” by Chandler. A dog with the name of “Cisco” was shot and beaten to death in front of his owner.…
