Background of VIRGIN

In 1968 a guy named Richard Branson started the Student magazine and that was the starting of his revolutionary business career and from that time Branson did not have to look back ever. Now today Branson has the huge size of his business which is VIRGIN BUSINESS GROUP. This group owns more than 200 companies. “Branson” and “VIRGIN” is now a symbol of a famous brand all over the world.

VIRGIN group holds a pretty number of companies. Most popular VIRGIN companies are VIRGIN Money, VIRGIN America, VIRGIN Australia, VIRGIN Money Giving, VIRGIN Casino, VIRGIN Holidays, VIRGIN Balloon Flights, VIRGIN Cola, VIRGIN Atlantic Airways, VIRGIN Galactic and VIRGIN Mobile. Starting a business from student magazine to airlines, VIRGIN group is now operating in many continents like America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

VIRGIN’s Competitive advantage

According to the Resource based view point, the resources which are valuable, scarce, difficult to imitate and can’t be substituted by another resources are considered as competitive advantage for the company. From this view point VIRGIN group has a couple of Competitive advantages. Their competitive advantages are shown below according to the VRIN model.

    Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson or known as Sir Richard Branson is well known as the founder of Virgin Group. He was born on July 18th 1950 in Surrey, England and he is the eldest son of Edward James Branson and Eve Huntley Branson, his father worked as a lawyer and his grandfather, Sir George Arthur Harwin Branson was a judge of the High Court of Justice. Until the age of thirteen, Sir Richard Branson was educated at Scaitcliffe School and He moved and studied at one of a boarding school, which was Stowe School until the age of sixteen. However, Sir Richard Branson wasn’t a brilliant and smart student, he had dyslexia (broad terminology defining an anomalous approach to processing information which caused a difficulty in accuracy of reading) made him struggling in his academic performance. Finally he decided to drop out from the school. After dropping out from the school he started a youth-culture magazine called “Student”, it successfully broke $8000 for its first edition. By 1969, Sir Richard Branson was living with music and drug scene surroundings, during that time, he came out with the idea of mail order record company called Virgin to raise his magazine business’ fund. The business didn't work so well however Branson was able to expand his business effort, he finally could add a record shop in London and finally He launched Virgin Records in 1972 with Nik Powell in which he installed a recording studio. However, the business journey of Sir Richard Branson wasn’t always worked according to his plan, Virgin’s financial condition was struggling in 1992, and one year later the company was sold to THORN EMI for $1 billion and on the day the contract was signed, Branson was reported completely crushed and cried. Although the nightmare for him happened, he still insisted to strive in music business and finally on the same year, he founded Virgin Radio and 3 years later he started his second recording company, which was V2.
