The New York City Transit Authority being a public benefit company cannot give economic rewards, for example bonuses, profit sharing, stocks, to motivate its employees, it instead uses being employed by the company and the comprehensive benefits packages that comes along with it, as the main motivator for its employees system wide. The comprehensive benefits package includes, Equal Employment Opportunity, protection against discrimination based on gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation. Wages are usually comparable with other companies. Employees are also entitled to paid vacation and sick leave, collective bargaining, the right to arbitration of disputes, medical and dental benefits, on going training and opportunities of promotions, generous pension plans, and the option to join other retire plans such as 401k plans, free transportation in New York City on its trains and buses. These benefits, along with the retirement plans, make the NYTCA a very desirable place to work and as such it is very competitive to become an employee. Other motivational methods are letters sent to all employees for different goals that have been achieved, and there are various competitions that employees can enter voluntarily to win cash prizes. Competitions such as "The Suggestion Program" enables employees who win, earn cash prizes if their suggestions have value and it can save the company a lot of money by either improving something like a mechanical device, or a way to do something different. These competitions give extrinsic and intrinsic value to the winner's and intrinsic value to the other participants (Bateman & Snell pg, 407). Motivational and congratulatory letters are sent to employees who have reached a number of year's service, or having a clean record, or having a good attendance record.…

Paper presented at the 25th Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism “Signs of the future: Management, messianism, catastrophe” 1-4 July 2007, Ljubljana, Slovenia by Dr. Jürgen Deeg University of Hagen, Germany Faculty of Economics and Business Administration Chair of Business Administration, Leadership and Organization Profilstr. 8, 58084 Hagen e-mail: juergen.deeg@fernuni-hagen.de Abstract: Facing an age of tremendous change and transformation, the ability to cope with such radically, i.e. discontinuous changing contexts is now a key variable for organizational success, performance and growth. Consequently organizational discontinuity is not only a major challenge in present organizational practices, but also a “true test” for organization science. While it is highly questionable whether organization science has read the signs of the future in this respect, the paper pursues a critical study of the organizational change discourse and provides an integrated view of organizational discontinuity as the epitome of future change processes. As the changing nature of change towards more discontinuity requires new ideas and visions for the analysis and explanation of this different kind of organizational change, the paper tries to integrate the opposite paradigms of determinism and voluntarism in organizational change discussion with a paralogic method. By combining continuous and discontinuous aspects of change and focussing on change and stability, an integrated perspective of organizational discontinuity is outlined. Viewed in such a perspective, organizational discontinuity is an intermittent interplay of order and disorder, which can be explained by evolutionary and revolutionary theories of change linked together in a model of “constructive destruction”. Furthermore a “re-evolutionary” perspective is presented, conceptualizing the delicate interaction between evolutionary…

Boeing has historically been a global leader in manufacturing commercial airplanes. However, in 2001, Airbus had more orders than Boeing for the first time in their competitive history. But, in 2006, Boeing regained its supremacy with 1,044 versus 790 orders for commercial aircraft. The main turnaround in this battle for competitor orders has been most visible in the super jumbo category with Airbus’s A-380 versus Boeing’s 787 . Apparently in 1992, Boeing and Airbus’s parent EADS agreed to a joint study on prospects for a super jumbo aircraft. The impetus for the study was the growing traffic in China and India. However, Airbus and…

Strategic management has been given significant attention for this few decades, because of its mass contribution to the success of the company’s long term goal. The word “Strategy” has its roots of military science, deriving from the Greek’s word “Strategos” meaning plan the destruction of one’ enemies through effective use of resources.” (Calingo, n.d, as cited in Ting, 2012a, p. 8).…

Human needs are states of felt deprivation. Needs are part of the human make-up; they are not created by external forces. Humans have a basic physical need for food, clothing, warmth, and safety; a basic social need for belonging and affection; and a basic individual need for knowledge and self-expression. Unlike needs, wants are not innate; instead, wants are needs shaped by culture, society, and individual personality. For example, an American needs food but wants a Big Mac and a soft drink. An American with ten dollars needs food, wants a Big Mac and soft drink, and demands lunch at McDonalds. Wants become demands when they are backed by consumers' buying power. Marketers conduct extensive research to understand customers' wants and demands. They then attempt to fulfill customers' wants and demands through their market offerings.…
