Strategic Leader
What are the true characteristics of a Strategic Leader? Well from my experience I personally have seen terrific insight into the art of leadership and strategy. I have personally witnessed some of the leasers who practiced this art and took the organization they worked for to great heights. I have also witnessed the other side and learn how not to commit such mistakes. My opinion of an effective leadership involves training and also entails helping individuals form an enterprising and immensely focused group. There are leaders and then there are great leaders. I have yet to truly see a great leader in this young generation. Not that I was around during President Lincoln or President Grant. These two were great leaders in different ways. President Lincoln was a leader that moved the people with words of encouragement and President Grant (although not a successful politician, but a true strategic General) moved his generals with strategic leadership on the battlegrounds as did the South General Lee.
A successful leader is always on the lookout for new trends and new threats, so that they continue to outpace the competition. Strategic leaders ought to always anticipate change before it happens, embrace it when it happens and make it work to their advantage. There is a choice of either being the cause of change or the effect of change. Either way, always scan and diagnose your business environment for change and the opportunities that come with it.
The most effective organizations are planning now for tomorrow’s leaders – specifically by interviewing for future leader skill sets and coaching/training those who are in the leadership pipeline on the key leadership competencies. With a new generation (identified as generation Y and Z) moving into the workforce and new expectations among top talent – today’s leaders need to be ready to address five core leadership traits for the 21st century.
According to The Hayes Group there are The Five Key Traits for Tomorrow’s

Is it possible that life experiences shape a person into a leader? Personally, my life experiences, both the ups and the downs, have shaped me into the leader that I am and want to further become. Leaders such as John W. Gardner and Coach John Wooden books titled, On Leadership and Wooden On Leadership, respectively have opened my eyes to realize that the path to becoming a leader is not a monolithic journey. However, both Gardner and Wooden stresses that what makes a leader out of those journeys are the characteristics that they acquire to change their lives and the lives of others. Even though each leader’s journey to leadership is incomparable, the characteristics to being an effective leader are shared.…

To be an effective leader, one must understand themselves as well as others. All too many times, leaders have projected their weaknesses on others and shifted the blame instead of owning their own mistakes and pulling on the expertise and skill of others to make things work. On the flip side, a leader that is very aware of their strengths and weaknesses as well as very aware of their own emotional intelligence can be very instrumental in getting people to meet and accomplish organizational objectives. Integrity, compassion, and courage are great traits of an effective leader that motivates and champions others so that planning can proceed and meet objectives. These are important traits to have and understand because strategic planning has a lot of moving parts and intricate details that will bring out many different attitudes and personalities and effective leaders/motivators need to understand and be able to shift with the many different dynamics of interpersonal relationships.…

Progress comes only through change – through thinking, feeling and performing in a new way. Leaders create change and with a Twenty First Century Leadership mindset individuals create significant change Conventional leaders and leadership of the past are insufficient to meet the demands of the 21st Century. As we enter the new millennium, our world is characterised by unprecedented complexity, paradox, and unpredictability. Change is rapid and relentless. Today’s leaders face demands unlike any ever before faced. Standard leadership approaches that have served us well throughout much of history are quickly becoming liabilities. The strategic management process helps institutions identify what they intend to achieve and how they will accomplish outcomes. The term strategic management is used to refer to the entire decision-making process. Strategic management must evolve by predicting the future (more effective planning), thinking strategically (increased responses, evaluation of strategic alternatives and dynamic allocation of resources) and creating the future (strategic planning through orchestration of all resources to create advantage) (Gluck, Kaufman & Wallach, 1980). Therefore the orchestration of all resources within an institution, strategically driven by a flexible planning process that incorporates the institutional culture, means strategic management is at work.…
