stranger in the village

Being a stranger in the village to me, means that you’re new and don’t know how things are performed. I was a stranger in the village when I joined a new soccer team. I was fifteen when I started playing for them. The team was full of Bishop Brossart girls and the girls have been playing together for six years. When I went to my first practice I didn’t know anybody. The only impression I had of Bishop Brossart girls were that they were mean and rude from experience with playing against them at Dixie. I was expecting nothing good from this team and a lot of mean girls.
The position I was taking was goal keeper and that position was a girl nick named Futch. She was everyone’s best friend. Everyone talked about Futch and all the memories they had with her when she played. It was very intimidating because I didn’t know if I was even wanted there or if they liked her better as a goal keeper. They were nice to me at our first practice and more than friendly but I knew they missed their friend playing with them. It was just a matter of getting used to change.
Practice was such a joke! My old team I played with for kings was so much different if you didn’t show up to practice you got punished. My new team only three people would show up to practice and it was such a culture shock because I am use to every one showing up to practice and having at least fifteen people at practice, so when only three people show up to practice I don’t know how to take it. I thought we would be awful and not play good together. I was very wrong we were great and undefeated, but the only thing that was bad for me was that because no one went to practice I didn’t know anyone’s name. As goal keeper you need to know people’s names because you have to call them out.
The girls all went to the same high school and there was a huge clique. Being the new girl it’s hard to jump right in and be there friend. The girls would talk about parties they all went to

I attended every all-star practice before our first game and was hungry with anticipation. The all-star tournament was single elimination, so if we lost even a single game it would all be over. I had some really good friends on the team although I was probably one of the least skilled players. We practiced nearly every day the two weeks before our first game. My excitement was steadily increasing with every practice.…

To be a stranger in the village means to be an outcast. Being a stranger to society is difficult to endure. People may feel depressed and lonely. They would do absolutely anything within their power to fit in. Many characters in the film Philadelphia by Ron Nyswaner are strangers in the village, for example, Andrew Beckett, Joe Miller, and Ms. Burton. From my personal experiences, I have been a stranger in the village many times throughout my 17 years of life.…

My accomplishments in softball were second team third baseman for my freshman and sophomore year and my junior year I got the first team utility player. I have got voted team captain in softball. In softball we had two coach changes, out first coach was Mr. Chavez and the coach currently is Mr. Torgeson. These two men have different coaching methods and it was very hard to adjust. Chavez was all about the hitting and Torg was all about bunting. There overall look at how the game is played are completely different from each other. Therefore when he had a coaching change it was a big shock for me. As a freshman, I played on the varsity team and I really loved getting to have that experience. I loved playing softball and I have played since I was about 5. In Softball I seem to always hurt myself, I have hip problems and I just recently had surgery on my wrist because of softball. Therefore I learned that you need to take care of yourself and work out to keep everything attached. You also need to practice hard to succeed because in my opinion, I think hitting a softball is super hard and you need lots of practice succeed. Softball is a great example of you will fail first before you succeed because in softball there is three strikes and you might not hit the first pitch but you can hit the next one. Therefore batting in softball you might fail first before he succeed. “Never let the fear of striking out get in your…

When the season began, we did not have a coach to lead us, so we practiced apace with the Varsity squad. A few weeks into the season, the Varsity coach found us a mentor that would lead us. As a few more weeks went by, our coach started picking up on more activities, which was too much for her to handle so she left, and we were once again without a coach. The team began to fall apart and it became very stressful for all of us. After the first three months of cheering, we had lost 8 girls on the team. Throughout those three months, my…

    The Cabin in the Woods

In “The Cabin in the Woods”, the film is directed around two locations in the movie, the “control room and the “cabin area”. The control room is visually brighter because that is where everything is being caused. It’s the work area to some therefore needs to be brighter than the cabin. With the “cabin area” being visually darker, you get a sense of danger and evil lurking within the woods. This is proven true when the “zombie redneck torture family” is released from their “grave” after the latin was spoken. These two areas have their own reason to being light or dark. These two areas are distinguished through the lighting. If it was dim, you knew you were in the woods with the cabin. If it was bright, you knew you were in the control room watching the cabin. Mise-en-scene is telling a story throughout the whole movie. Even though you don’t know the time, it is clearly figured out with the sky being dark only to assume its night time. The majority of the characters are introduced within the first ten minutes of the movie. They are given a title to themselves later on in the movie to show the type of people the control room needed to sacrifice to satisfy the Gods. Mise-en-scene also shapes the audience’s attention and feelings when everyone starts to die. Once you grow attached to a certain character and they die, you’re not sure how to feel. Mise-en-scene helps the story plenty. You are given all these elements and once you put them all together, you have a reasonable storyline that is easy to follow. The scene where all five characters are in the basement admiring the artifacts, you get a sense that something is wrong. Marty is the only one to figure everything out. A theme to this movie could be that nothing is what it seems. These five friends thought they were going to have a great weekend getaway but instead end up playing a cat and mouse game to save their…

I joined MYB in 5th grade. I wanted more of a competition league after coming from Upward basketball. The first year my team was horrible and everyone went their separate ways after the season. I joined Dave Buffenbarger’s team the following year hoping for a better outcome. A lot of the girls on that team were some of my close friends, and some were not. This was not a problem as we quickly became close. MYB gave me the chance to make new friends through their league and become even closer with my old friends. With a few players always coming and going after each season, I ended up playing for Dave up until my senior year. Being on Dave’s team for so long gave me the chance to grow close to my teammates. Being with my team for many years and…

That wasn’t the only circumstance that taught me those lessons. I was bullied for being on the varsity team in 8th grade. I wanted to stay home and cry because girls would torture me daily. However, my love for the game forced me to hop in goal and save any shot I can. In my final year as I was named captain. I realized I made the right choice, to not give up. After all, if I learned anything from being a goalkeeper, it was to ignore people in the stands and get on with trying to win. My love for the game and for being a goalkeeper taught me to not only be tough but it also taught me how to be determined and loyal. If it wasn’t for soccer, I don’t know what kind of person I’d…

    1. Joss Whedon says that ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is “your basic horror movie taken apart; five kids go to a cabin in the woods to have a fun weekend of partying and possibly sex… and are therefore dismembered”. Whedon and Goddard have in essence tried to create a movie with roots tied to the horror genre; it is simply your common slasher movie where the characters are killed off one by one till there is either one person left or none for that matter. ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ also has ties to other genres such as comedy, this can be seen in scenes such as where they are all sitting around in the main room, playing truth or dare, and Jules is dared to kiss the wolfs head on the wall, also in the scene where Marty has a bong that can retract into a coffee mug. 'The Cabin in the Woods' turns the horror genre on its head. The film is a satire and pays homage to some of the great scary movies from the past such as Sam Raimi's 'Evil Dead' and also Dario Argento's 'Suspira'. Another genre that is incorporated into the movie is sci-fi. We see this when Marty and Dana descend in the lift to where the scientists are, we then see various ‘nightmare’ characters with some being human and the majority being made up creatures, this is part of the sci-fi genre as it usually contains monsters and mythical creatures that are not found in real life and questions normality.…

Everything was so cool at first because I didn't realize anything that was happening because my excitement got the best of me. Then I stopped getting excited to go to practices. The old Coach did not even pay any attention to the new players. He did not try to teach them the game of soccer or even how to play. It just seemed he only payed all his attention to his returning players. Which, absolutely did not make any sense to me at all. Mainly, because since the fact that they already knew how to play. They had been playing since they were really young children. I felt like It would just make a lot more sense to work with the new players. So they can know how to play and understand the actually game of soccer more. But, since he did not see it that way, he did not do that at all. So when he did put me in the last 5 minutes of what it seemed to be every blue moon, that's not exact. But, he would get upset and pull me right back out of the game because I was not doing anything right. This is because he did not teach me the right thing to do. It even happened at practices, there was very many days when he just…

I made the team my junior year. Although I did not start the first games because the coach would put some of his favorite players in but one game he put me in second half and no one would get pass me. I was taking all the all the balls away from the opponents and also winning them in the air. After that game I became the starter for every game. It felt good because there were only seven juniors on the team and I was one out of three juniors that started every game. But I was really clad for myself because all the hard work I did over the summer paid off. We were in a tournament and were playing to go to the finals. We won 7 -1. I scored my first goal in that game. When I thought everything was going good one of the opponent player slide and hit me in the knee with his cleats and I just fell and I could not walk because it was the worst pain in the…

In the essay "Stranger in the Village" the author tells about his experience in a small Swiss mountain village where he visited from America. In this very small secluded town populated by all white people the author is the only black person that the people of the village have ever seen. "From all available evidence no black man had ever set foot in this tiny Swiss village before I came," (93). The author would stay in the village for a short stay and then go back to the US, but he often returned to work on his writings, due to the fact that the village had few distractions. Even though he is no longer a stranger to the village the natives still treat him as so. "Everyone in the village knows my name, though they scarcely ever use it," (94).…
