CO1 - ASSIGNMENT 2
Semiotics and narrative
FME1.CO1-05
Mick Tielemans, 140852, Class 3a, 06-10-2014
1 write down the (re)constructed story
The story constructed in this advertisement is that if you use Duracell in your toys they will last forever, meaning they will never die, and start coming back and hunt you. The girl used Duracell in the doll, and probably threw it out after a while, replacing it with a new one that is sitting at the table with her. You can tell she is playing with the new doll because of the tea set, the tea cup she has in her hands and the other cup in front of the doll. Eventually the doll came back to hunt the girl. This Is also a joke based on a horror story about a doll that kept returning to the owner even though she kept throwing it out, eventually trying to destroy it, but it kept coming back, it never died.
2 determine which visual signs are plot elements that are essential for the (intended) story (re)construction and write them down.
The girl
The tea set
The doll (in good shape)
The doll (in bad shape)
The open door

3 describe for each visual plot sign: The signifier, the object and the (narrative) interpretant.
The signifier
Image of a girl
Image of a tea set
Image of the doll in good shape
Image of the doll in bad shape
Image of the open door

The object
Girl
Tea set, refers to the girl playing (with the doll)
Doll in good shape
Doll in bad shape
Open door, meaning the doll came back and doesn’t just randomly stand in the room

Narrative interpretant
Girl is playing with new doll
Old one came back
4 is the verbal text in the ad a plot element that is necessary for (re)constructing the story?
Yes, without the text you (probably) won’t know what the ad is referring to and what it means. The verbal text makes the story complete and because of it you know why the creepy looking doll is standing in the door. You then know that it has come back after being gone a long time.
5 determine whether the qualities of the product or unique
