Stop Hurting The Poor!
MA #1 We all want to end poverty right? Of course! But listening to the news today can be somewhat confusing. Depending on what channel you turn to, you can here different views and sides on any given topic. I do however, believe that most Americans share the same views on poverty; we want it to end! But here is where it gets muddy. How do we end it? Job creation. That’s right, job creation is the best way we can end poverty in America. I agree with Herbert J. Gans in his essay, “Fitting the Poor into the Economy” (pg.285), where he states, “the most efficient antidote to poverty is not welfare but full-time employment.” Unfortunately too many policies today are killing job opportunities. Although there are many policies I believe that the current Obama administration is guilty of killing jobs over, I would like to briefly argue just one; Obamacare. First, I will begin by giving you a brief background on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. Obamacare was signed into law on March 23, 2010 and after many argued it was unconstitutional, it was upheld by the United States Supreme Court on June 28, 2012. This ruling did, however, allow states to opt out of Medicaid expansion. A couple of Obmacare’s main benefits include more affordable healthcare coverage to Americans and it is supposed to regulate the health insurance industry. Unfortunately it is already having
Aragon 2 disastrous side effects. The worst side effect so far, comes from the employer mandate that is part of the Obamacare law. This mandate states that any business with 50 full-time employees or more will be forced to offer health care coverage or be forced to pay a fine of $2000.00 per full-timer after the first 30 workers. I believe this mandate is the main reason why Obamacare is killing jobs. When I first began searching for evidence that Obamacare was killing jobs, it wasn’t difficult to find

The Affordable Care Act will cut the number of uninsured Americans by more than half. The insurance coverage will cover ninety-four percent of the American population, which reduces about thirty one million uninsured people. One of the substantial changes to our health care system includes having individuals carry health insurance and prohibiting insurers from denying health insurance coverage due to preexisting condition. It will change the focus of our nation’s health care system from treating sick people to prevention, increasing access to care and ensuing quality health care for everyone.…

The Supreme Court ruled on June 28, 2012 that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 also known as the ObamaCare Act is to be upheld, even the controversial parts, where people without health insurance will have to pay a fine starting in 2014. The ObamaCare Act was started to “help reduce overall health care costs by making services available to 32 million who currently cannot get health insurance”(useconomy.about.com, part of the New York Times Company Amadeo, 2012). The Act will make it so insurance companies cannot disqualify a person from receiving health insurance because of a pre-existing condition, and will also make sure that insurance companies do not drop someone because they are sick. Large companies with more than 50 employees will have to offer health insurance, but they will receive tax credits. “The Act will lower the budget deficit by $143 billion over the next ten year by raising some taxes and shifting more cost burdens”( Source: CBO CBO Report on Health Care Reform and the Budget; Wall Street Journal, What Health Insurance Ruling Means, June 28, 2012; NPR, Medicaid Expansion, June 27, 2012, useconomy.about.com, part of the New York Times Company Amadeo, 2012). Starting on January 1 2014 everyone in the United States is supposed to have health insurance. The hope is that if everyone has health insurance, the healthy people are going to equal out the unhealthy people and so insurance should not be too high of cost, or too expensive, but people are afraid that is not what is going to happen. If a person does not qualify for Medicaid or does not purchase health insurance by January 1, 2014 they will have to pay $95 (or 1% of their income whichever is higher), in 2015 people without insurance will have to pay a penalty of $325 (or 2% of income) and in 2016 they will pay $695 (or 2.5% of income). About 4 million people will end up paying the penalty instead of purchasing health…

Obamacare doesn't address the lack of sustainability of our healthcare system. It won’t keep insurance prices down, more than 30 million people will remain uninsured, and insurance companies will manipulate their way out of any imposed regulations.…

The United States of America is a rich and powerful country. The way we handle political, social, and ethical issues are closely watched by the entire world. We are a free democratic society who has entrusted our government to make the best, most appropriate decision for each individual in this country, even if that means we have to pay a little more. Obamacare is one of many policies that illustrate the American people’s willingness to help one another. According to “Obamacare Facts” (2013), Health and Human Services (HHS), the department in charge of implementing and overseeing the Affordable Care Act, reported that in the first two months of open enrollment nearly 1.2 million Americans had selected a health plan.…

America is about to make major changes in the country’s health care system. The goal of the Affordable Care Act is reduction of the number of uninsured individuals and health care expenses. Some call the reform unconstitutional, some fear inefficient implementation will lead to the opposite of the anticipated health care cost reduction. According to Kaiser Health Tracking Poll 29% of Americans have very unfavorable opinion of the health reform law compared to only 18% with very favorable attitude (See Health Data, 2010-2011).…

Obamacare was signed into law on March 23, 2010 by President Barack Obama. The ACA was designed to offer healthcare to all groups of American citizens, mainly to the upwards of 30 million uninsured Americans. Although there were several reasons this reform was necessary there were a few main reasons that seem to stand out. Being able to offer health insurance to those that suffered from pre-existing conditions as well as not put limitations on the amount of coverage these Americans could actually maintain and keep. It wasn’t unheard of to be capped to a certain amount of coverage once a patient became sick. The US Census Bureau (2011) estimated there to be somewhere around 49 million uninsured Americans in 2010, so this reform would cut down on that number…

President Obama 's plan to insure healthcare for all marks a positive step for the well – being of our country 's citizens. Still, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) also known as ObamaCare has been one of the most controversial topics of our time. In order to understand why this is such a controversial topic we must understand exactly what this act means to the people. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) states that with limited exceptions, every resident of the United States must have health insurance that must meets certain basic requirements. Beginning in 2014, individuals who do not acquire health insurance will be subject to a fine. This fine will rise over time, reaching $895 per person or 2.5 percent of income, whichever is greater, by 2018. Beginning in 2014, each state is to establish an Affordable Insurance Exchange. Separate exchanges are to be established for individuals and small businesses with fewer than 50 employees. The intention is that private insurance companies will compete by offering policies on the exchanges to individuals and small businesses. Low – income individuals and small businesses with 25 employees or less will be eligible for tax credit to offset the cost of buying health insurance. For the employers, beginning in 2014, every firm with more than 200 employees must offer health insurance to its employees and must automatically enroll them in the plan. Firms with more than 50 employees must offer health insurance or pay of $3,000 to the federal government for every employee who receives a tax credit from the government for obtaining health insurance through their state 's health exchange. The government plans to regulate insurance companies by requiring all insurance to participate in a high – risk pool that will insure individuals with pre – existing medical conditions and were unable to get insured.…

The Obama healthcare plan has raised a lot of eyebrows especially those of lobbyist and this is what they had to say about his healthcare plan. Will Newton, executive director of the National Federation of Independent Business/Texas stated, His organization supported the court’s opinion, but his team of lobbyist is headed to try and get Congress to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and exchange it with something more affordable. (Newton, 2012). He goes on to say how the act never mentioned anything about the cost, members of his organization confirmed that prices had indeed increased and had risen over 110 percent in the last decade. Small and large business owners want to drop employees’ healthcare benefits, due to the fact that…

    Pros and Cons of Obamacare

Obamacare is an extensive bill that completely transforms the healthcare system. The main part of the bill is the individual mandate that requires all citizens and legal immigrants to have health care coverage. If individuals do not have health insurance by 2014 there is a monetary penalty. In order to allow many Americans to obtain coverage, it outlines a major change in insurance practice in that companies are no longer allowed to deny individuals health insurance because of pre-existing conditions; individuals are able to buy into health insurance at anytime. Obamacare expands Medicaid for those who cannot afford health insurance; the expansion will supply more than 17 million more Americans with health insurance than before the bill. People who are employed can fulfill this health insurance requirement by enrolling in their employer’s plan. Health insurance must be provided through employers if the company has 10 or more employees. Small businesses will be subsidized so that they can afford to provide insurance. People without insurance through their employer will be able to buy plans through health insurance exchanges, where most will qualify for subsidies, greatly reducing the premiums. Exchanges are run by the state or non-profit organizations and require that all insurance companies offer certain plans that make it easier for Americans to determine the differences between…

Taxes are going up as another result of this health care act. “The taxes that may affect you directly are the individual mandate and the employer mandate.” (Obamacarefacts.com 2016) There were several new taxes that were made to help pay for Obamacare including taxes on pharmaceutical sales and medical device. People with high income also got an additional tax put on them. Some other cons of Obamacare include enrolling complications, businesses cutting employees hours to avoid having to give them coverage, and higher costs. Some people have gotten stuck paying more for Obamacare than they did under their previous health care plans. “ A heavily cited (and debated) 2013 Associated Press report estimated that the health insurance policies of 4.7 million Americans were canceled due to noncompliance with Obamacare standards going into the inaugural year.” (Elizabeth Renter 2014). Many opponents of Obamacare believe that legislation will demolish jobs, hours are being cut and full-time employees are becoming slim. About 1.2% of the population will mainly be paying the tax rather than the health insurance they should be paying for because the taxes are getting so…

Another interesting fact is the disparity of affected younger workers. Out of Two Million workers, 1.7 million of those are 55 and older and only 300,000 are ages 25-55. This is a huge gap leaving many unable to establish or set up stable lifetime expected earnings due to fewer job opportunities. The hard cold fact is that once this law comes into effect, many businesses will make the choice to move more full time workers to part time positions. This will skew the unemployment numbers giving a more hire numbers yet not telling the story of underemployed Americans further hurting the growth of the United States Economy. As of January 2012 as much as over 8 million people are working part time because they could not find Full-Time positions. This new Health care lay plan will increase those numbers making the problem worse.(Furchtgott-Roth, Diana, 2012)…
