STOLPESTAD

We all know the type. He is a dry stick often a maverick. Although he is very aware that he feels he will be completely unable to communicate it. He will go to the local pub and stay there for hours and hours after the end of the day’s work - not because he’s an alcoholic but just because he can’t stand his wife asking him all the time - How was your day? Did you see anything exciting? What’s wrong? Why aren’t you answering me? It is because the main character in Stolpestad (2008) by William Lychack has become discontent with the utter stagnation in his life.

Stolpestad is the main character in the short story. He is a police officer, born and raised in the town where he lives. His world revolves around the small town containing the coffee shops, the liquor stores, Laundromats, police, fire, gas stations (p. 1 l. 4-5) as the narrator tells us, this is his life. Note that assuming the narrator is Stolpestad himself, he actually defines himself by this place - those few things listed before is everything he sees himself in - he has no sense of own identity. However Stolpestad is filled with a longing, he describes the streets as sad, and as he drives by them he is hoping to glimpse someone or something - yourself as a boy perhaps (p. 1 l. 13) He is desperate for a change and wonders where his youth went. His whole life is like the sun never burning through the clouds, clouds never breaking into rain (p. 1 l. 2-3) nothing ever happens no good nor bad.

Stolpestad never expresses through the story how discontent and desperate he feels, he probably never even said a word to his wife about it. However as it is popularly said; his actions speak louder than his words. Besides the sphere of adjectives in the text put the by the author, Stolpestad shows his discontent and despair when he instead of returning home to his wife and children after a long, hard day’s work, finds comfort at the bottom of a pint and yet another pint at a local pub. The initial impression gathered from the passage is bizarre and very dreamlike, perhaps chiefly because it is an excerpt from a novel or a larger literary work. Upon further analysis, the passage develops an eerily violent tone. The events appear to take place in the home of Dieter Bethge, during a stormy night while he is sleeping. Immediately the rain is described as falling with “sodden fury”, introducing the negative tone. Shortly after this description, Mrs. Hax adopts the persona of an animal stalking its prey. She “methodically trimmed the glass out of the frame” eerily without emotion, despite the fact that she is on her way to cause harm to Dieter, as what can further be assumed by her act of “comitt[ing] her injuries in advance to Bethge’s head”. The “atonal ringing” promotes the eerie feeling further. There is no pureness or musicality in atonal ringing; it is an unsettling sound. The uncomfortable feelings of the first paragraph, along with the unnatural and uncomfortable falling of Mrs. Hax from the basement window, are drastically contrasted against the natural, peaceful description of Bethge’s dream. The “perfect, graceful dance” performed by the bear caused him “great peace rather than alarm”. The two paragraphs that describe his dream are completely peaceful, and then the following paragraphs seem to shift “from dream to the sharp, troubling present”. The paragraph which begins with “He tried” sets a weirdly relaxed mood despite the tension of the situation. It almost reflects the “perfect, graceful dance, performed without a hint of the foppishness or studied concentration that mars the dance of humans” that was performed by the bear in his dream. There are no harsh word used in this paragraph other than the word “striking”, but there was no blood gushing or limbs snapping, his mouth only “filled with something warm and salty”. The blood was “singing in his veins”.…

“Gretel in Darkness,” a poem by Louise Gluck is an example of a poem revisiting a renowned fable, but it gives its readers a new perspective by crediting the important things that happened in the tale. Throughout the four stanzas in this poem, it appears that it doesnt have a clear rhyme scheme. Louise Gluck, urges the readers of this poem to try to think about fairytales a different way. Therefore, she allows the readers to find out the reasoning behind the pain and suffering that Gretel went through by the use of her superior language. The author of the poem, Louise Gluck uses the word ‘darkness’ to compare it to how the women are portrayed in a patriarchal society.…

The setting is symbolic as well as literal. It is a place that is not safe after dark a place where some one even a soldier can be picked up by the guards just for walking the streets after dark. “‘He had better get off the streets now. The guard will get him. They went by five minutes ago’”(Hemingway 148). This was said by one of the waiters as they watched a young soldier and a girl walk by on the street together. This implies that there is a country or statewide curfew put into effect for safety reasons. This gives the impression that it is not safe to be out after dark and that if a person is out they are in danger or are dangerous people themselves. The story describes how the streetlight shines on the soldier’s brass number on his collar. This shows his identity as a soldier. This is symbolic showing that all things are brought to light and in the light all people or things true nature is reviled. This part of the story gives the reader a literal sense of the setting showing how it is an unsafe environment. It also gives a symbolic sense of why some characters in the story would choose to stay in the dark and not the light.…

We are first greeted with a very explicit description of the day itself. “Sun never breaking through the clouds, clouds never breaking into rain - the odometer like a clock ticking all these bored little pent-up streets and mills and tenants away.” (Page 1, line 2-4) This description suggests that it is always like this, the town never changing, never moving on, constant and a duplicate of the day before, just as the life of Stolpestad. Every street, every shop and home the same as they were in his childhood memories. He has always lived here, but his portrayal of the town bares little enthusiasm or fondness, almost suggesting a negative outlook on his life. The ambience of the setting continues on the same dull note, when the area in which the dog is located is presented. “..the grass and scrub weeds, the sumac, the old tires, empty bottles, paint cans, rusted car axel, refrigerator door.” (Page 1, line 24-25) The setting reflects somewhat on the mood of the character, including the cloudy summer day, this hints towards the characters despondency, both towards the situation and possibly his life. Because the setting is sketched in quite a vivid manor, we are led to assume it has great importance to both the story and the main character. Stolpestad obviously sees little to no excitement in his life, which is portrayed in the setting and hints towards the two coinciding with each other.…

As mentioned above we hear about the main character Stolpestad. He’s a police officer who doesn’t seem to be pleased about how his life turned out to be. He doesn’t seem happy about his job and it just seems like his life is at a standstill: “Was toward the end of your shift, a Saturday, another one of those long slow lazy afternoons of summer – sun never burning through the clouds, clouds never breaking into rain – ...” The day is described in a bit negative way because of the choice of words such as “long” “lazy” and “slow”. But it also seems like both these word and the weather description are a symbol of Stolpestad’s life. Everything seems a kind of inadequate – just like the weather. The sun is never really shining so much that it’s sunny, but at the same time, it’s not really rain either. The weather seems a kind of stagnant - just as Stolpestads life.…
