Stitches

When I was 6 years old, I needed a few stitches. I went outside which I normally didn’t do. Except that day was a rare occasion. I saw my cute little maltese puppy outside wagging her tail happily. I loved my dog, Heidi. The sun was setting so she was now fading into my backyard. So all I saw was a few flashes that were her eyes. I pet her when I got outside. She licked my hand happily. She ran around our small backyard with extreme speed .I watched her, amused. I ran after her but my little 6 year-old legs would only carry me so fast. Then she ran in front of me. I tried to stop from running into her.

As I backed away I tripped over my soccer ball slamming my chin on the concrete. I got up and shook it off. My head didn’t hurt surprisingly. I told Heidi goodnight and went inside. My mom was at the stove like always. She was either cooking or cleaning the kitchen. She heard me close the door and turned around. She looked at me like she just saw a ghost.

She yelled my dad’s name. My dad slid in. I stare at him wondering why they were freaking out so much. My dad told my mom to calm down or she would make me get freaked out. They showed me to the bathroom. Gustavo came in with his blanky. He was quietly peering at my chin ever so curiously .Then said “Here Mayra.” handing me his blanket. I held the small beige colored thing for a while then handed it back. I told him I don’t want to get it bloody. He nods. I looked at my chin in the mirror. My chin was bloody and all gashed. It looked like it should have hurt but it didn’t, not one bit or I would be crying.

I must have blacked out because the next thing I know is that I am suddenly in a car with a rag under my bloody chin. As we entered the emergency room a few nurses told me to sit down. They took me to a different room, a smaller one. They told me the doctor would be here soon. I lied down on a bed like thing. It was very uncomfortable. There was a TV in the upper right corner of the room. I

What I meant by go tell the teacher was go get help but I didn’t say that. He didn’t say anything he just ran off. I should get up he’s probably not going to come back, I thought. To get out you had to crawl through one of the hexagon holes. I could barely even get to my hands and knees but once I did, I could only crawl with one arm. Once I got out I had to use the bubble to help me stand up. I started out walking slowly I had to keep my balance. I was so dizzy, I felt like I was going in circles while was walking. I had just made it on time to go back inside before they closed the…

The red knot (Calidris canutus) or the rufa red knot (Calidris canutus rufa) is a medium sized shorebird, the second largest sandpiper (Calidris), measuring between 25 and 28 cm long with a wingspan of approximately 20 inches (United State Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), n.d.). (See Figure 1). The species has been known to travel great distances; breeding in the Arctic regions of Canada and migrating south in the winter months to the coastal mudflats and tidal zones (USFWS, n.d.). Every spring the red knot reaches the beaches of Delaware Bay with very little body fat and for three short weeks forages on the highly nutritious eggs of horseshoe crabs before they continue migrating north to the Artic (Karpanty, et al., 2006). (See Figure 2). This…

My dog, Pepper, is a black Cocker Spaniel, and she loves to greet her owners at the door when we walk in. Her little butt starts wagging really fast, and she has the biggest smile on her face. On Friday the 13th, I was walking inside my house with a friend. I wasn't thinking of my little dog being right there. When I stepped inside, I heard a loud squeal. Pepper quickly ran from me, and my mom rushed to the door. I realized that I had accidentally stepped on my poor puppy's paw. I…

The sky was nice and clear. It wasn’t too hot or too cold. It was perfect. It was a typical third grade day. My friends and I were in recess, goofing around, having fun. We sat on the benches and joked around. Next thing I knew my friend was on my back and I was carrying him around. Not aware of my surroundings, I tripped over a bench, closed my eyes, braced for impact, and fell face first into the dirt. I got up feeling dazed and the first thing I hear is a scream. Confused, I looked over to my friend and her face was a mixture of scared and shocked. I saw friends run to the restroom to get me paper towels, but others told me to go to the office. As I walked to the office, I began to feel pain in my lip. I walked into the office speechless.…

I woke up the next morning from our hotel door opening. My family had came back from eating breakfast. I had food crumbs all over my old self. My stomach rumbled. I was so hungry. My mom noticed and grabbed some dog food from our closet. She put it in the bowl and sadly I snarfed it down. After I eating and drinking some water, I went out onto the patio with the book,“My Dog and Me”, in my mouth. I don’t remember whom the author was but I thought it was an excellent read. I was reading how they were driving their car when my mom came onto the patio and saw me reading and took the book out of my mouth and…
