When comparing the videos demonstrating the Stevens Grip versus the Burton Grip, I found that neither trumps the other in supremacy. They both possess qualities that would be needed for different styles. In the first video, Gary Burton playing with Chick Corea, the grip that he invented, The Burton Grip, was crucial for the style he is playing. He was playing Jazz Vibraphone, and the burton grip is designed to have a smaller interval range, which allows the player more freedom in playing melodic passages. When Burton was playing, he would play chords for when Corea was soloing, and Corea would play blocked chords whenever Burton would solo, which he did by kicking out the lower mallet in his hands, and be play melodic passages with just two mallets. His mallets seemed to be covered in tightly wound cord.

During the marimba concerto played by Nebojsa Zivkovic, he was utilizing the Stevens Grip, which allows for a more open and spread interval. When using this grip, it is hard to do what Burton did, which was kick out a mallet to play melody, but usually this type of grip is used to strict

A standard drum kit is generally used in reggae, but the snare drum is often tuned very high to give it a timbales-type sound. Some reggae drummers use an additional timbale or high-tuned snare to get this sound. Cross-stick technique on the snare drum is commonly used, and tom-tom drums are often incorporated into the drumbeat itself. An unusual characteristic of reggae drumming is that the drum fills often do not end with a climactic cymbal. Wide ranges of other percussion instrumentation are used in reggae. Bongos are often used to play free, improvised patterns, with heavy use of African-style cross-rhythms. Cowbells, claves and shakers tend to have more defined roles and a set pattern.…

What Nathaniel Anthony Ayers does is quite impressive. He plays three instruments, including the cello, the violin, and the double-bass. At the time that Mr. Lopez met Nathaniel, Nathaniel had a violin that only had two strings, but he played his heart out like his violin was complete. He believed his violin was complete, but the closer and closer he got to Steve, he got closer and closer to having an actually complete violin and cello.…
