He is unique and the first of his kind which bridges the gap between human and gems. Each of these Gems have a gem in which produces the energy necessary to project a physical form. Mainly, the Crystal Gems fight corrupted gems which wreak havoc on Earth but sometimes the corrupted gem is too powerful to fight. Therefore, the Crystal gems would resort to using a technique called fusion to strengthen their physical strength. Fusion is the harmonious motions between two or more gems that collaborate to create a whole new identity, with new powers, and a new personality. Steven Universe was a show meant for children however, the overall plot and detail that was put into it has made a children’s show filled with satire yet also exploring real problems some teenagers face when they are growing up, alienation. Sugar also explores character development and issues through various songs throughout the show, which provide further insight of who the Crystal Gems really are. When gems fuse, the sound of this instrument is played through their gem and combined with one another to create a whole new sound. When Pearl and Amethyst start to fuse to from Opal, the individual sounds of their instruments are heard. Pearl’s instrument is classical piano. The sounds that are made are clean, crisp, and precise which is a good representation of her personality. Amethyst’s music is mainly comprised of drum beats. The sounds are erratic, spontaneous and energetic which is a good representation of her personality. When they start to fuse, the sounds start to mellow together but at the end they dissociate and disappear along with the fusion Opal. This is important because the sounds are representative of their actions and if their musical sounds do not blend, the gems would not fuse. When Opal retrieved Steven from inside the bird, her music is heard playing. Opal’s instrument is a high energy piano. The sounds that are made are structured yet erratic, energetic yet precise. Opal’s instrument and sounds are resonance of Amethyst’s and Pearl’s sounds. This helps the audience realize that fusion is not just for fighting but it is also an intimate process. By leaving oneself vulnerable and accepting, a gem would be able to fuse by combining their attributes.
