Characteristics of an effective leader.
“Good leaders treat people with dignity and respect.” Many of the charateristics seen in good leaders, such as self-awareness, reliability and sensitivity to the strengths and weakness of colleagues, are also features of followers. Taking responsibility and accepting consequences are other key components of leadership.(Rebecca Walberg(2010,January) Elusive lessons of leadership. National Post,pg.FP12) Effective leaders are, in effect, the compass that keeps an enterprise oriented toward a common goal, on that track toward a vision of future success.(David W.(2009,October) Effective leaders drives business success. National Post, pg.FP4)

Leadership can be defined as a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential. All leaders essentially strive to complete the same tasks: provide direction, set goals, make a vision, build a positive environment, instill values, motivate, resolve conflict, and teach. James Kouzes and Barry Posner (2002) developed a survey that asked people which characteristics of leaders they look for, admire and would willingly follow. In 1983 Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner began a research project on the study of leadership. They wanted to survey leaders throughout the world to find out what actions these leaders took that brought them success. They wanted to hear the very best leadership stories these leaders could remember when asked to tell about them.. These leaders surveyed were from all walks of life, some were first line supervisors, others were top level CEO's, and some were mid level management. Kouzes and Posner surveyed literally thousands of leaders over a number of years and they were able to identify that when leaders were doing their best work they all had several common factors working for them. When these leaders were doing their very best they were practicing what Kouzes and Posner came to call the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership (p.13). These practices can be used by anyone who wants to be a leader and if used properly these practices can help a leader be successful and foster great improvement within their organization.…
