Ultimate Expression of Self One may view the beauty industry as a revolutionary road to independence and the future of beauty has never been more in the consumers’ hands. There are so many different looks that women can tap into, as well as taking pages from histories fashionable predecessors. What modern beauty really endorses is the individuality of a person through the representation of the body. However, the independence of beauty has also come with negative side effects for the youths who largely look up to their overly mature role models. Even though such businesses, such as Victoria Secret, gear themselves towards a “college demographic”, there is no denying that teenage girls shop at the same store with panties stating things like “Let’s Get A Room,” “Take It Off” and “I Get Around.” While words may seem harmless, these words may be projecting an overly androgynous sense of self as women have not always been seen as their own property. Although white and black female models are represented throughout the magazine there is limited representation of their racial counterparts. In the whole magazine, one Asian model was shown (Seventeen 3) and her face was facing away from the camera. Needless to say, that even though white and black models and actresses are represented throughout the magazine there is a clear distinction of pigment as the only darker black skin tone represented was on page 61. While famous people like Tyra Banks have talked about the separation between light and dark skinned black’s one must wonder what the lighter skin really means? While one ponders the social issues still regarding race one must note that young African American girls will view this magazine and see lighter skin as more desirable even though skin tone is beautiful at any

Women are shown in subordinate, submissive, and male pleasing roles. Media and advertisement representation reflects and reinforces sexism in society today.     Kerrang! magazine is a music magazine that is mainly based on rock music. It is published by Bauer Consumer Media in the United Kingdom. The magazine's name is onomatopoeic and refers to the noise made when playing a power chord on an electrical guitar.
