Part I

Define the following terms:

Term | Definition | Stereotypes | Unreliable, exaggerated generalizations about all members of a group that do not take individual differences into account. | Prejudice | A negative attitude towards an entire category of people, such as a racial or ethnic minority. | Labeling theory | This is where that the labels people are given affect their own and others perception of them, also channeling their behavior either into deviance or conformity. |

Part II

Select three of the identity categories below and name or describe at least 3 related stereotypes for each:

* Race * Ethnicity * Religion * Gender * Sexual orientation * Age * Disability

Category | Stereotype 1 | Stereotype 2 | Stereotype 3 | Race | If a person is African American then one can stereotype them by saying that African Americans do drugs. | If a person is Hispanic one can stereotype them by saying that they have to many children to where they cannot afford them all. | If a person is Caucasian then one can stereotype them by saying that white people are trailer park trash. | Religion | That Catholics like to drink | That Christians believe that they are better than any other religion that is not a part of their group. | That the Jewish religion is greedy and money hungry | Disability | That people with disabilities just want to live off the government | That people with a disability is less intelligent | That a person with a disability cannot speak for themselves. |

Part III

Answer each question in 100 to 150 words related to those stereotypes:

* What are the positive aspects of the stereotypes, if any?

There can be some good aspects about stereotyping which can be good in references and applying for jobs. Say that you are of a certain race and that race has a great background for work ethnics, so in return you apply for a job (which you may not be a great worker) and because of the stereotype of your race you are hired. Also say you get pulled over and you are also stereotyped as a race in whole of having good reputations, and never bothering anyone else, so you are free to go without any warnings or citations. That’s all I can think of.

* What are the negative aspects of stereotypes?

Some negative aspects about stereotyping is what it says in itself- stereotype- to judge someone before getting to know that person just by the way they look or talk. Example if an employer is hiring and a man comes to the interview with torn clothes the employer in return will stereotype this person as a bum and turn the person down. If someone has been in jail the community where the person lives mat stereotype him as a criminal, untrustworthy, a thief, they may not give this person a second chance and they do not even know him. Another negative is if someone is of another ethnic, one will stereotype them as different weird, and will also not give this person a chance.

Answer each question in 150 to 250 words related to those stereotypes:

* What is the difference between stereotyping and prejudice? Use examples to illustrate the differences.

Differences between stereotyping and prejudice is stereotyping is where people do not take another person’s differences into account and judge them by what they heard and not by what they can find out about someone. Prejudice is where hate comes into play on an entire ethnic group one may have prejudice because of a groups color, or religion. Example an African American male has heard of a business hiring and has many years experiences in this field finds out about the time and location but only has old torn clothing to wear. He goes anyway and is second in line for the interview the boss sees him walk up and shakes his hand. As this man is talking the employer is stereotyping the other man from his clothes and the way he talks so he does not hear anything else being said. The employer shakes the man’s hand and says thank you and we will give you a call to let you know. (stereotyping) On the other hand the same scenario the business owner does not like any other race but his own, so when he sees the African American male in the lobby he has his receptionist to ask the man to leave without even interviewing him. (prejudice)

* What is the relationship between stereotyping and prejudice?
The relationship between stereotyping and prejudice is that they both take the form of judging a person or a group before even knowing them just by what you heard or was taught. These two are the same by going by what you heard about a ethnic group for instance say there was a group of Caucasians and they lived in a trailer park now this can be stereotyping already for the fact that whites and trailer parks are said to go together, now for the prejudice side a person of another ethnic can say that these people who live in this trailer park is white trash and that they are worth nothing and dirty. That they hate them not only because of the trailer park but also because of their race, so both prejudice and stereotyping these are both saying that they are trailer trash, dirty, and not worth nothing, or would never speak to them without meeting them.

* What can be done to prevent prejudice from occurring?

There can be a lot done to prevent this from happening first and foremost is to act when someone sees this happening bring awareness to your surroundings, and let the person know that is having this hate crime done to them that they are not alone. Another thing is to unite gather friends, family, classmates, and members of your community to help stop this write to your senators and congressmen to raise more awareness, and go to the news to get it out there faster. Support the victims of this crime let them know that there are places to go, and help give them a voice, let them know that you are there and are going to do everything you can do to help them out. Help teach tolerance this matter is learned find out where/ who taught it to people and go to the source help educate them and find out why they are like they are. Look into the issues and help that divide everyone and start somewhere to help make a stand and a difference.

Think about Chris Paul, LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant. You think that those players are the best in the game, but are they. There are very good white players that are legends. Think about Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, John Stockton, and Steve Nash. All of these white legends are very good. Some African Americans are good at sports, not all and there are white players that are very goof if not better than some African Americans. Stereotypes have a big impact on society and we should just ignore them so that our society will be a better one.…

According to Brown (1995), “definition of stereotyping through prejudice is the holding of derogatory social attitudes or cognitive beliefs, the expression of negative effect, or the display of hostile or discriminatory behavior towards members of a group on account of their membership to that group.” Many different groups of people experience stereotypes every day. The tattooed, the politician, the feminist and the older people we call senior citizen are all members of a group that commonly face this type of issues and a breakdown of society. These stereotypes lead to negative opinions closely related to discrimination. Unfortunately, in a daily basis, stereotyping is a form of pre decision that is common in today’s society as it was couple hundreds of years ago. It is a social outlook that has stood the test of time and received interest by psychologists and philosophers.…

A stereotype is an exaggerated belief about a group that can be positive or negative but generalizes without allowing for differences (Louisiana Voices, 1999-2003). One example of a stereotype would be racial profiling. Racial profiling is an inclusion of racial or ethnic characteristics in determining whether a person is considered more likely to commit a particular type of crime or an illegal act or to behave in a “predictable” manner (Wikipedia, 2010). For instance, some people will hear crime stories all over the news today and automatically assume that an African American, probably male, committed the crime. These crime stories, might indeed, involve African American males, but not all crimes are committed by African Americans.…
