Stereotypes And People's Expectations
Stereotypes and people’s expectations of us greatly affect the way we live, especially if those stereotypes are negative and those expectations are low. Sherman Alexie perfectly illustrates this in his article, “Superman and Me”. He demonstrates how the power of expectations have caused Native Americans to lose hope, and remain stuck in a helpless cycle that is passed down through the generations. I wholeheartedly agree with Alexie that people are dragged down by the expectations of others. If people expect you to fail, you are more likely to develop a mentality that is negative and constantly view yourself as a failure. Thoughts are powerful. There’s a quote that talks about how your thoughts become words, words become action, habits

We all have encountered some type of stereotype or prejudices. A stereotype that I had to face was age prejudice by me being so young sometimes people don't set the high expectations for you that other people would at an older age because they expect for you to make mistakes. At times my mindset isn't where most kids are at my age. I skipped pre k and I am supposed to be in the 8th grade. When I tell people my age they be like " OMG you are young to be the grade that you are in" this is a perfect example of what I am stating that people sometimes think that you have to be average and can't go over and beyond your years.…

My belief is that everyone deserves to be respected treated equally despite their skin color, social class or sexual orientation. We should simply treat people the way we want to be treated. People would treat others with disrespect and … based solely on their appearance, without thinking twice how it would feel if that same attitude would be redirected at them. The two theories that have impacted my beliefs the most are social and race theories.People are constantly being mistreated on petty things such as how old someone is or skin color. I believe that those are not legitimate reasons to judge another human being.…

Everyone has their own opinions on what beauty consists of. It is in cliché expression “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This means beauty can come from within a person’s soul or from the outside of looking at woman’s body. As it just happened, saying the word “beauty” on most occasions comes hand in hand with the word woman. In the story “A Woman’s Beauty: Put – Down or Power Source” by Susan Sontag. Sontag states; “To be called beautiful is thought to name something essential to women’s character and concerns. (In contrast to men whose essence is to be strong or effective, or competent.)” (Sontag.488.1) The word beautiful may not seem synonymous with men in 2015 but handsome is, as the word “handsome” feels more masculine.…

Public speakers can change societies by changing their way of thinking and/or giving a certain group a voice. Martin Luther King Jr. led the famous "million man march" and was one of the main figures that gave the African-Americans a voice during the Civil Rights movement. The infamous Adolf Hitler made an entire country believe his xenophobic ideology that the Jewish people were the reason were to blame for Germany's impoverished state. Even Socrates changed the way of Greek thinking altogether by introducing a new of way of thinking known as logos. One of the examples of a speech changing society was when Wiley College debated Oklahoma City University.…

In American society it is a social norm for women to be delicate and vulnerable, they are seen as too weak to do the same things men do. This was especially true during the time period in which the stories “The Yellow Wallpaper,” “Jury of her peers,” and “Story of an Hour” were written in. The characteristics of gender roles, shown through in each individual story and hint at the stereotypes that were places on women of that time period. These specific female characters don’t let those stereotypes define them, they break free and show their true strengths. Though their societies would suggest them fragile, the main characters -- Louise Mallard, Minnie Foster Wright, and the narrator of “The Yellow Wallpaper” -- respectively presented in the…

For example, racial stereotyping for an Asian student says that they are smart and excel in school, so with this in mind the student will more confident and more determined to keep this stereotype in place. Though many people believe that there are many good stereotypes, but the negative stereotypes always outweigh the positive stereotypes. One stereotype would be against African-American students who are stereotyped as being adept in sports but slow in intellectual activities. Research has shown that negative stereotyping can temporarily decrease memory capacity (UA News Services). With this stereotype and a student’s awareness of it, the student would perform poorly knowing that he or she is expected to be lacking in intellectual ability. The student knows that this is what society expects out of him or her and that also explains why the Asian student would do better if they knew about the racial stereotype. Sometimes it is not the student who is at fault, but society for accusing the student to be something they are not. Racial stereotyping shows the student what others expect out of them, so many would try to uphold this stereotype instead of acting against it…

How do perceptions and stereotypes affect others’ understandings of ourself? Stereotypes and perspective can affect other’s understanding of ourselves. Whether positively or negatively, what group, religion, or culture we are in can define us. Whether the stereotypes about your group are true or false, they still are a part of who you are, even though it may be completely inaccurate. In the novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, there are two separate social groups, the socs’ and the greasers.…

I listened to “Something only I can see 2016.” This episode portrayed the struggles of being different. Unfortunately, people’s perceptions can make people feel worthless or inferior. People often judge each other based off of their learning or physical disability. A physical or learning handicap, should not defy an individual. At New England Academy, I feel that my learning disability defines who I am. When teachers and students misunderstand my goals in regards to academics, it decreases my confidence. My passion is limited, consisting of energy bursting with excitement and enthusiasm. When trying to excel, I am subdued to a lower force by negative comments intervening my path for success. It is inconceivable how strenuous it is, to justify and explain my opinion. Ultimately, confidence is the most important factor. Alluding to the episode “Something only I can see,” the difficulty is not the knowing but the explaining and understanding.…

Stereotypes and prejudices can color our judgments of others at an unconscious level and create a negative evaluation of others based solely on what group they may belong or what color they are. Stereotypes limit our vision of others, they are always potential dangers. For example, Police officers are also more likely to pull over black drivers in expensive cars than white people in expensive cars. However, not everyone recognizes this in their behavior.…
