Why Steel? apid progress in recent times has put India’s already poor and ageing infrastructure under pressure. The Indian government has sharply increased investment in infrastructure with several ambitious projects in the pipeline.

Looking to achieve a 9-10% GDP growth rate, the government plans to increase spending on infrastructure to 10% of the GDP from the current 4.8%. The finance ministry has provided Rs 1,73,552 crore for infrastructure development in FY11, which constitutes over 46% of the total planned allocation. All sectors falling under infrastructure are going to use steel intensively. The Indian economy shifted to the 8-9% growth rate trajectory in the 2004-09 period, causing a sharp pick-up in steel consumption, which registered a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.7% during that time. The National Steel Policy 2005 was announced by the government to cater to the diversified steel demand and to achieve global cost competitiveness, quality and efficiency in production. The focus is to take indigenous production to 110 million tonnes by 2019-20, with a CAGR of 7.3% per annum. Currently, India’s steel production capacity falls short of demand and the gap has to be filled with

The scrap metal market in Asia has become increasingly profitable in recent years. To take advantage of this, Panting Steel purchased a scrap metal processing company in South Korea called KSN International. This takeover provided Panting Steel with an Asian base without having to make substantial investments in new manufacturing sites and processing equipment. All KSN’s managers and employees were retained after the takeover, and Panting Steel sent over two senior US employees to oversee operations and make sales.…

Despite its positive performance, competition in the U.S. steel industry was keen in 1986. At that time, the industry had sustained seven straights years of decreasing domestic demand, falling 22 percent since 1979 — but still demanding 90 million tons annually. Mini-mills accounted for 16 percent of domestic steel capacity, up from seven percent in 1975. Meanwhile, integrated steel-makers, although a major competitive force, were plagued by the complexity of their steel-making process as displayed in Exhibit 3 of the case, their own failure to invest in new technology, price-competition from imported steel, and turbulent labor…

The U.S. steel industry is comprised of three distinct groupings of companies – integrated steelmakers, minimills, and specialty steelmakers. The main difference between them is the stark divide in capacity as well as what they actually manufacture. Integrated firms can produce 107 million tons of steel through reduction of iron ore, and minimills have a capacity of 21 million tons, and these businesses utilize a scrap melting process. Specialty mills have a capacity of 5 million tons, and for the purpose of this analysis, the focus will remain between the first two types of firms.…

In 1986, U.S. producers shipped 70 million tons of steel mill products. Subtracting exports of one million tons and adding imports of 21 million tons implied 90 million tons of domestic consumption of steel that year. Relative to the most recent peak year, 1979, domestic shipments had decreased by 30% and domestic demand by 22% (see Exhibit I). The decline in demand derived from the stagnation of many steel-intensive industries, particularly automobile manufacture, efforts to use steel more efficiently and the emergence or substitute materials such as aluminum, plastics and advanced composites.…

The five forces for the steel industry are the buyers, substitutes, suppliers, threat of new entrants, and rivals. The buyers have a fairly strong power on the steel producers. This is because of the low switching cost between competitors. Unless a contract is signed between a steel company and its buyer, there is little cost to the buyer if it wants to switch to a different steel company. There are not very many substitutes for steel, as steel is a commodity, so the substitute power is weak. Steel is a one of a kind item in that it is very strong and very versatile in its use. It is used in buildings, automobiles, bridges, garage door openers, and many other everyday objects. Suppliers also have a weak power in the steel industry. The suppliers are supplying iron to steel companies. Iron is very common and many companies sell it. Also, steel companies frequently integrate backwards and provide their own iron to their steel mills. The threat of new entrants is very weak due to high…

Once the world’s largest steel producer, U.S. Steel has experienced a considerable dip from its hey-days. Its fall in prominence can be attributed to its failure to adjust to an ever-changing global market. While there can little argument of its initial innovative nature, over the decades, U.S. Steel has seen its market share steadily decrease as a result of increased domestic and international competition. In the new millennium however, U.S. Steel has made the necessary strides by outsourcing its production and demanding U.S. government protection from international competition, particularly from the Chinese steel market.…
