Steel and Heat Treatment
Steel and heat treatment
MILD STEEL
Mild steel is also called plain carbon steel. It is the most common type of steel and it price is pretty low. Its composition is around about 0.05%-0.29% carbon content. Mild steel has a relatively low tensile strength but the surface can be hardened through carburizing. It is mostly used where large amounts of steel needs to be formed eg structural steel

MEDIUM CARBON STEEL
Medium carbon steel has great wear resistance and is used for forged automotive components and large parts.
Its composition is approximately 0.30%-0.59% carbon content.

HIGH CARBON STEEL
High carbon steel has great responses to heat treatment and is very strong and has longer life then medium carbon steel. High carbon steel is used for springs and high strength wire.
Its composition is approximately 0.6%-0.99% carbon content.

STAINLESS STEEL
Stainless steel is defined as an iron carbon alloy with a minimum of 10% chromium content. The name stainless steal comes from the fact that it does not rust or corrode which makes it stainless. There are many different types of grades and surface finishes to suit the environment where the metal will be placed. Stainless steel is commonly used in balustrades, watch bands and household appliances.

CAST IRON
Cast iron is usually referred to as grey cast iron and identifies a large group of ferrous alloys. Cast iron is hard and brittle and is a non malleable alloy. It is used for man hole covers and as engine blocks for petrol and diesel engines.
Its composition is 2.1%-4% carbon content.

HEAT TREATMENT
Heat treatment is the method used to change the physical and chemical properties of the material. It does this by manipulating the properties of metals by controlling the rate of diffusion and also the rate of cooling within the microstructure. This processed is used in the manufacturing of

Steel is an alloy of iron and a small amount of carbon. Specimens of steel have been found which date back to over 4000 years, and has been a major staple in the industry since the 17th century. Polish can be applied to steel to enhance its shiny properties to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Brasso steel polish for example can achieve this. To apply polish, simply make sure the area that requires finishing is clean and dry, then by using a dry cloth, begin to rub in the polish evenly across the surface. Buffing is then required for the best finish possible to come out.…

Steel requires the mining of iron ore, coal, limestone, magnesium, and other trace elements. To produce steel, iron must first be refined from raw ore. The iron ore, together with limestone and coke (heat-distilled coal) are loaded into a blast furnace. Hot air and flames are used…

Aluminium and their alloys are widely used as construction materials from house hold appliances to air-craft parts. The commercially pure aluminium has merely low corrosion resistance and hardness compare to aluminium alloy. In this study an attempt has been made to study the influence of heat treatment on the properties of commercially pure aluminium. The investigation was consisted of identification of commercial aluminium through colour identification in chemical test and its subsequent heat treatment. The experimental parameters were heating temperature, cooling rate and quenching medium. The prepared specimen were heated at 300, 500 and 600 °C and then subsequently cooled either in open air, slowly in the furnace or quenched in furnace oil. Hardness of the heat treated and without heat treated specimen was measured in the Rockwell Scale. Corrosion resistance of the sample was evaluated in 3.5 % sodium chloride solution by weight loss method. It was found that specimen heat-treated at 500 °C showed higher hardness and corrosion resistance compare to that heat-treated at 300°C and 600 °C. Oil quenching specimen provided maximum hardness and corrosion resistance compare to slow furnace cooling and air cooling. So, it is said that hardness and corrosion resistance of commercially pure aluminium (99 % pure) could be improved through heat treatment at 500 °C and subsequent quenching in oil.…
