Stealing: Theft and Store
Cost to Society For Shoplifting
Shoplifting is a major problem in today life. The temptation of not paying for something, just hiding it away and saving your own money is a large factor for some people. The culprit just thinks he’s getting a product for free and doesn’t know what he’s actually doing to himself and the community. Negative effects of shoplifting effect business owners, business customers, teenagers, and society as a whole. When a theft from any business occurs, it is harmful to everyone. The effects of shoplifting cost United States businesses approximately six billion dollars every year. About one out of every three businesses fails because of the effects of shoplifting.
In this essay I’m going to explain some of the circumstances of stealing from local stores, or any store. After I have been caught stealing I found out how wrong it is and how it is harmful to everyone. The stores are trying to crack down on shoplifters by making the punishments as strict as possible.
The effects of shoplifting are harmful to the consumers. Stores often have to increase the price of their merchandise to make up for all the stolen goods. It is estimated that families spend three hundred dollars every year to make up the cost of what shoplifters steal. Most of these families need this money. Shoplifters are the cause of families not having as much money because they have to make up for the cost and pay more on foods, clothes, DVD’s, etc. When shoplifters steal a product from a store, the price on that product will go up. That is how it affects shoppers of that store. If there were not any shoplifters, prices on goods in stores would decrease massively. Honest shoppers now fall into the same mistrust category as shoplifters because they cannot be distinguished from one another easily by the retailer.
Shoplifters also affect store owners. They affect store owners in many ways. One way is that when a shoplifter steals, that business loses profit and money.

Larceny is “the unlawful taking of personal property with intent to deprive the rightful owner of it permanently”, defined by the Merriam - Webster dictionary. There are different levels of larceny. There is Grand Larceny which is usually defined as theft of a more significant amount of property. In the United States it is often defined as items or currency that is valued as $400 or more. In New York grand larceny applies to amounts of $1000 or more. Grand larceny is classified as a Class A felony. To bluntly say it, larceny is stealing from others. No matter what the motives or reasons behind stealing are, it is still wrong. I imagine there are a million of motives for someone to convince himself or herself that it is worth the risk to steal something. Some other people might also not have the conscience to feel wrong for stealing. A large part of this is because people do not understand who or what they are harming when they steal. Most people don’t care and only worry about their problems. Even after being caught someone might only feel bad for himself or herself.…

If you get in the habit of stealing I believe it always starts out in people as they are young adults or children. It’s greatly enforced by peer pressure, or in some cases, just wanting to have everything you couldn’t. For me once I got in it, it was hard to get out and almost became a routine and a drug to steal, such as my case making me a kleptomaniac. The need to do it for my case came from the thrill and adrenaline I got from doing it every time as well as having such a reputation that I could do these things. It was greatly influenced by my friends to keep doing it as well as my own inability to stop myself. Only after getting caught twice as a child, I was able to learn my lesson and turn my bad habits around with the help of my mother and the court system.…

There is a lot of public embarrassment involved with shoplifting too. If an offender isn't given an alternate choice, he or she will have to go to court. The court process is public for anyone who wants to go, and rumors start getting spread about shoplifters, who may not want anyone to know. When the privacy of a shoplifter, ashamed of his/her crime, is violated, that person may have to deal with mockery at school and may even lose friends over the fact that some people may lose trust in the accused. This makes the process even more difficult for the offender because they may feel that…

Every day, US department, retail, and grocery stores lose an estimated 91 million dollars to shoplifting. But how is this happening? Are our technologies too simple, too easy to outsmart? Or are the people in today’s society underestimating their ingenuity? Despite the psychological effect of stopping some people from becoming shoplifters, anti-theft devices don't actually stop or deter the professional or determined. Not only do anti-theft devices waste people's time, they do not catch or identify shoplifters any better than a camera could.…
