Statement Of Purpose Of The Adopt-A-School Program
Every Friday during the semester, I made my way to an elementary school to participate with the Adopt-A-School program; which was apart of an educational initiative for my sorority. The mission of the Adopt-A-School program represents a tremendous opportunity to positively affect the lives of students, teachers, and volunteers. My chapter chose to adopt Berg Jones Elementary School in Monroe, Louisiana. This was an inner city school that ranged from Pre-K to grade 5, and included about 500 students. Through my two years of volunteering, I was rewarded with such a gratifying experience as well as some encouragement of what I wanted to do as a career in the future.

Although I worked in the classrooms of many teachers, my favorite was Ms. Smead.

    Welcome to the world of Jenks Public Schools (JPS), a world where high achievement, an outstanding athletics program, and multitudinous opportunities for involvement in extracurricular activities abound! It is a world in which high test scores and national awards are the norm rather than the exception, and yet never taken for granted. An important goal of Jenks Public Schools is to identify and provide appropriate educational experiences for those students who give evidence of high performance capability in the area of intelligence or in high school academics and who require differentiated learning opportunities or experiences, provided by the school, that develop such capabilities. There are thirty-five private/nonprofit schools in the Tulsa area. There are three private schools within the JPS attendance area. Over the past three years there has been an average of 177 open transfer requests from families in other school districts to enroll in JPS. Conversely, during the past two years there has been an average of 30 open transfer requests from JPS families to enroll in other districts. This is a testimony to the high expectations for teaching and learning in the District. Because of the desire on the part of parents to enroll their students in JPS, homes sell for premium prices within the District’s boundaries. Base on housing starts and the average cost of homes. The net gain of the total district enrollment has increased by 823 students over the past 10 years, from 8448 students in 1994 to 9271 students in 2004.     Throughout the past few years I have taken part in many projects and activities to foster education and global engagement. The most recent is my upcoming outreach trip to the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club. This trip was planned by myself, 3 other education students and our faculty supervisor. The purpose of this trip is to provide support for the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club (AZBGC). As Education students, we are taking this opportunity to provide daily lessons for the children who visit the Boys and Girls Club. We started the planning in September and we have put in over 120 hours since then in order to make this trip as beneficial for the children at the AZBGC. Apart of this planning, we have raised funds to help support the children's’ education costs. While planning for this outreach trip, I decided to partner with a local grade seven class to teach them about social justice. Their classroom teacher told me that with the recent media attention in the USA she is having difficulty teaching her students about justice and discrimination. We decided to partner together to teach both the Ugandan Children as well as the Canadian grade seven class about what it is like to live in a different part of the world.
