Statement Of Purpose For Civil Engineering
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Construction on a whole has always inspired me to look for greater heights. With the advent of high rise buildings in India, it became imperative for me to know in details of this industry.

I started my modest education from a small town in India namely Bhadrachalam. Here I got to know the nuances of life and this laid the foundation for future. It is here that I learnt about virtues, ethics, and morals, and it is here that I first learnt about friendship, about the joy of sharing and about the spirit of living.

I completed my schooling in 2000 with an aggregate of 82%. I spent the next two years working diligently towards my goal of becoming a successful manager in the long run. I specialized in Mathematics, Physics

In my 4 years of undergraduate work as a Civil Engineer, I have come to understand the truly vast scope of this field and with my appetite whetted, I see the need to explore and develop depth in my subjects.

This yearning to learn more about the fascinating field of Civil Engineering, the high quality education and excellent research facilities, the cultural diversity, that American Education is famous for, and the Advanced Construction Technology employed in Americas Construction Industry (yet in its burgeoning stage in India) strengthened my decision of pursuing Graduate work in America.

Realizing the need to equip myself with the computer aided techniques in the field of civil engineering, I had taken up courses on AutoCAD (2D & 3D), STAAD pro. During the break after the fourth semester, I felt the need to be associated with projects that were going on in the college. I got myself attached with the construction work of new cafeteria building under the supervision of Prof.Bala

I have taken part in the traffic survey in one of the busiest parts of Hyderabad. I was drawn into a group assessing the duration of time for signals to be installed at a high density traffic situations and also carried out volume studies. Another real time experience in field work was, when I was involved in the surveys for laying of a road in a hilly area near Hyderabad.

Also, I was an active member and one of the organizers of an international conference regarding ADVANCES IN CONCRETE AND CONSTRUCTION, in which eminent scholars in the field of civil engineering showcased a part of their immense knowledge. I had a wonderful opportunity of interacting with several professors and experts of international repute and learn the widely held practices. I also participated in the environmental awareness program; Creation of Awareness for Sustainable Environmental Management (CASEM-04) organized in our college which brought out the various problem-causing aspects of the

Since I am interested in civil engineering, I paid a lot of attention to learning the different branches in the work field. In the second meeting of this year, a geothermal engineer gave us a presentation on his daily job. I found it very intriguing for being able to travel sites in different kinds of geographical area while collecting data to research on the building types that can be built on that place. Knowing this definitely helped to understand the perception of the job about the challenges and the exciting part of it. I would love to take courses in geotechnical and I am also interested in having areas of focus in hydraulic and structural.…

The Hoover Dam is one of America¡¦s greatest civil engineering marvels (Hernan 22) and ¡§has become a magnet to those fascinated by human ingenuity at its best¡¨ (Haussler 30). With its enormous size and construction during the Great Depression, it was an interesting topic to me. I would like to major in civil engineering and, at first, I was researching this topic. I was looking for salary and job descriptions. Then, I discovered the name John L. Savage, the engineer who supervised the design of the Hoover Dam and many other dams in the United States. Savage worked on the Minidoka irrigation project in Idaho after joining the United States Reclamation Service in 1903. His future of building dams first began "When I first went out to the Snake River Valley,¡¨ he said, ¡§I saw only a river and a lot of wasteland. After the dam was up the land changed. It got water. Farmers moved in to work the soil. Crops grew. Then came villages and towns. That's why I think this is the happiest, most thrilling work in the world¡¨ (qtd. in McCann). The characteristics he describes are evident to me, as well as other people in this field. All of the great buildings and projects of the World were overseen by civil engineers. These water resources projects, such as the Hoover Dam, not only disturbed the flow of rivers but created towns, industries, and even developed a desert region. Unfortunately, the dams can also cause adverse effects.…
