Betty L. Poskey
114 Westchester, Lufkin, Texas 75901
Home (936)238-3504 Cell (936)671-9289 poskeybl@gmail.com My name is Betty Poskey. I am a proud wife, parent and grandparent. I am currently a fulltime student pursuing a BAAS in Applied Health at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. When I was a small child, my father became very ill. Doctors discovered a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy only having been researched within the past five years by UTMB researchers. My family made hundreds of trips to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston with my dad for medical checkups, medications, and tissue biopsies. My grandparents drove my parents and me once a week in the beginning and over the next five years of his medical treatment. My five siblings were in school most of the year and stayed with my favorite aunt. Later, during the summer, my mom loaded us all in our old Chevy station wagon and we would make the drive at least twice a month. After year ten, with my father’s physical deterioration he could no longer maintain any employment to support six children and a spouse. Unable to work anymore our family endured many hardships. Our family needed the special assistance that only UTMB could provide. I was amazed how such a huge hospital could be so nurturing to my family. They provided for not only my father’s medical needs but they also reached out to my entire family. The staff gave us the emotional support and reassurance we so desperately needed.
Spending so much time at UTMB gave me a fascination and newfound love with the medical field. I truly wanted to grow up and be like the workers at the hospital. I have always been a caregiver; as soon as I was old enough to apply, I became a Candy Striper Volunteer at my local community hospital. While in my teens, I read anything medical that I could find at the local library. The idea of working in the surgical dept. consumed my thoughts. My idea of surgical staff duties

There are many things that fall into place with that, which to me, mainly includes education, because I am a student and I work in a college where I work with students and I listen to their problems and relate to them. So education is very important in general, but to me Community and Industry Education is very important and important to a lot of people. It’s amazing how much I’ve learned in the past eight months at Fortis Institute. It’s just so hard to believe that less than two weeks we will be done with my education. I must admit I will miss spending my time here. But most of all I will never forget the experience I received as an Intern Medical Assistant working with Patients.
Making a difference in someone’s life just fascinates me, knowing that I have the power to help someone. Working at North Belt Medical Clinic as a Medical Assistant intern is one of the greatest life experience. I will not trade it in for any other work field. Becoming an assistant also supplies knowledge of the most intimate interactions of the natural processes, giving a glimpse of processes that are not easy to understand. At this Center the patients are Diabetes related. As I spend more time as an intern at this Clinic I was inspired by Dr. Willie Harrison who helped and gave hope to many of these people, had myself raise some questions on the concepts and wonder what it would be like to be a part of the North Belt Medical team or somewhat relate to this field. I believe that Medical Assistant program classes at Fortis Institute help gave me an opportunity to pursue my passion for helping those with medical problems and let me feel at ease on the first hand training at the North Belt Medical Clinic. At the North Belt Medical Clinic I learn to Answering phones and making appointments ordering supplies, greeting patients, pulling and filing patient charts, calling in or faxing prescriptions, converting charts to electronic charting. Hopefully I can take these skills I learn and better myself in life.…

After Graduate School, I hope to have my PhD in psychology or my doctorate in psychiatry. I would like to start out working in jails, talking to criminals and analyzing their brains versus the brain of an average adult to study how the brain reacts with criminal activity and why they do and feel what they do. I have heard that a person can not do that type of work for very long because it is emotionally tasking so after that, I would like to open my own counseling practice up. I would do either marriage and family therapy or focus on teenage depression. Eventually, I would like to retire into school psychology or become a psychology teacher. Also, if I ever have enough money, I will buy a house devoted to taking in stray animals…

My professional goal is to become a teacher with hard work and dedication I know I can reach my lifetime goal. For my extra-curricular activities, I have attended the Head Start at Brookhaven Community College where I have volunteered over thirty hours in a semester to get myself prepared for the profession. Going to the local Head Start gave me the opportunity to see if this is really what I want to do for many years. I put myself in a position where I actually enjoyed what I was doing, I had patience which a lot of people don’t have to teach younger kids. I worked with three to five years old, I had to show them I was the leader. In my four years of High School, I have taken my time out to be a leader in my school. I was vice-president freshman…
