Introduction

The overall objective of this experiment is to determine the mass percent of NaClO, sodium chloride, in standard bleach. The purpose of part 1, is to standardize Sodium Thisulfate, Na2S2O3, with the primary standard Potassium Iodate, KIO3. The standardized Na2S2O3 will then be used in Part 2, to help determine the mass percentage of sodium chloride in bleach. The chemical equation used in standardizing sodium thisulfate is, IO3- (aq) + 5I- (aq) + 6H+(aq) ---> 3I2 + 3H2O followed by I2 (aq) + 2 S2O3-2 (aq) ---> 2I- (aq) + S4O6-2 (aq). This reaction shows that when KIO3 and KI are combined under high acidity, I- is oxidized by IO3- and forms I2. Once sodium thisulfate is added to the mixture, I2 is reduced to I-, once again. Once all of the iodide is used up in the reaction, the liquid will changed from brown/yellow to clear. This means that the solution has reached an equivalence point. Since I2 changes the color of the solution, it will be used as an indicator in the titration experiment. In part 2 of the experiment, Na2S2O3 is used to determine the mass percent of NaClO in bleach. The reaction related to this part is as follows: ClO- (aq) + 2I- (aq) + 2H+ ---> I2 (aq) + Cl- (aq) + H2O and I2 (aq) + 2S2O3-2 (aq) ---> 2I- (aq) + S4O6-2 (aq). KI is added to dilute bleach in which the hypochlorite will reduce I- to form I2. Once this solution is created, it will be titrated with the sodium thisulfate solution from part 1 to find the mass percent of sodium hypochlorite. Balanced equations are very important in this experiment because, if the equation is balanced, mole ratios between reactions can be found.     Experiment and Observations: As I performed the lab, I had to retrieve all my equipment’s from my labpaq. As I started to setup, I had to weigh out 1.0 gram of CaCl2*2H2O on the digital scale. After it was weighed, it was added to the 100 mL beaker and 25 mL of distilled was added and stirred. Next, I had to figure out the amount of the second reactant, so that it can be added to the solution. I had to perform stoichiometry to figure out the amount of Na2CO3 is needed to make a precipitate of calcium carbonate. After the calculations, I arrived at .72 grams of Na2CO3 and rounded to the nearest tenth to mix with 25 mL of distilled water. After both of the reactants were mixed separately with distilled water, they both were clear color. As soon as you added the solution of Na2CO3 to CaCl2*2H2O the color of solution changed to a cloud white color. When both solutions are mixed, the paper filter that was provided with the lab must be weighed and recorded. A common way sodium hypochlorite gets into the San Francisco bay is through daily household cleaning products such as laundry bleach.     The purpose of the Density Lab was to determine the identity of four unknown solids and two unknown liquids by calculating their densities and comparing them to a density chart, taking into account error analysis and finally classifying the substances. In order to calculate this density, we first found the mass of the container that was to be holding the substances. We then found the volume of the substance, and lastly determined the mass of the container and substance. We subtracted (Container + Substance) – Container to find the mass of simply the substance. In order to distinguish density, we took the final mass divided by the volume, and identified the substances based on Density Charts we found online.
