In the 1760s the British passed some laws and taxes to help repay war debts from the French and Indian War. In spite of this the Americans took action against Britain. The taxation without representation and the acts England passed on the colonists caused them to demand independence from England. The taxes such as the stamp act and tea act made the Americans furious to the point where they fought back against Britain.
After the French and Indian war Britain had a lot. To help repay this debt they started taxing the colonists. In 1765 Britain passed the stamp act. The stamp act taxed many written and paper documents. The stamp act taxed so many documents that the colonists were paying a lot more money for things they buy everyday, like newspapers. If they wanted to buy some land they also had to pay a tax. The british did not let the colonist have a say with this act. The stamp act was against the law. The king was betraying his country. The colonists decided to fight back against them. So they dressed up as Indians and went on a British ship and threw all the tea in the harbor. “We then were ordered to open the hatches and take out all the chests of tea and throw them overboard and we immediately proceeded to execute his orders, first cutting and splitting the chests with our tomahawks, so as thoroughly to expose them to the effects of the water.” Document 4. All that tea they threw overboard was worth millions. Britain was very mad. The group of colonists that did this were called the sons of liberty. The sons of liberty were colonists who held secret meetings and acted against Britain. They took action because they were tired of being unlawfully taxed by

    Britain was very controlling of the colonies and wanted to control the trade that was happening during this time which made the colonies angry (document 3). The Townshend Act was disliked because it added some tax on tea which was a good that everyone drank.     In the period from 1756 to 1765 England was fighting the French in the Seven Years War in Europe. The English also fought the French in North America. The English won both at home and abroad, but at a high financial cost. The English government decided to make the American colonists pay for their protection against the French and help subsidise the costs of the Seven Years War. The American colonists, on the other hand, did not agree that they were vulnerable and believed they could protect themselves as they had done for the past one hundred years. So the British government passed acts such as the Townshend Revenue Act, which put a tax on tea, paper, paint, and lead. These acts forced the American colonists to pay off some of the great debt left by the Seven Years War. Some acts even allowed the British regular troops to stay in the colonists’ houses. The colonists were given no say in any one of these laws and acts. The colonists then began the outcry “No taxation without representation!” This eventually led to rebellion and the colonists went to war with Britain in 1775 in defence of their rights thus resulting in the American Revolution.…
