Staffing In The Military
The next function is Staffing. Staffing is the achievement of organizational goals through effective and efficient deployment of people. Shahin (2012) noted military personnel are required to train, equip, organize and deploy to support worldwide combat and peacetime contingency operations” (p. 6). Along with meeting these requirements, there are many other military commitments that must be adhered to such as completing various levels of professional military education, general military education, and advancement requirements. Each division within the weapons department is responsible for ensuring their personnel are ordnance certified at the rights levels to ensure the mission can be accomplished safely and expeditiously. Recruiting, screening and certifications are critical in this process to ensure no one has any medical, mental or physical conditions that would prevent them from handling ordnance. If an individual is involved in an explosive mishap or is involved in an alcohol/drug incident he or she may be held responsible under the Uniform Code of Military Justice articles 112 or 134 (Uniform Code of Military Justice, 2015).

The next function of management is leading. Leading can be defined as stimulating people to be high performers. I believe this aspect of managing is one of the most important functions. Leaders play an important role to guide their employees to achieve higher levels of performance by challenging others to do their best whether you are a young airmen, a second class Petty Officer, a Chief or the Ordnance Handling Officer. To be an effective leader you must have followers. In any organization, people are your greatest strength. Leaders must take the time to invest in their people by motivating, coaching and mentoring, correcting and rewarding their employees. In an organization, managers use the controlling function to monitor the overall performance to ensure that organizational goals and objectives are being met. Managers should always keep the employees and team members informed as to what they expect from them. This helps reassure the employees that they can depend and trust the management. The controlling function of the ordnance on-load is ensuring that all personnel involved are monitored during the ordnance on-load which take anywhere from 12-48 hours to complete from start to finish. The most effective way of controlling this situation is to have all supervisors in contact with each other by way of hand-help radios. That might sound easy to accomplish but you have to plan to have a supply of charged batteries, and operational charging stations for uncharged batteries. Failure to have effective two way communication can easily cause challenges during an ordnance operation. Not controlling this problem can start your ordnance on-load down the wrong path. This is just one example of how not controlling the situation can disrupt the whole ordnance on-load evolution. Constant monitoring, follow-up, and metrics engage personnel involved in the ordnance on-load evolution advising them on how the on-load plan is being executed helps control the overall attitude of people during long working hours.     Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for ones actions. Those that are unable to be accountable are the ones that jeopardize the combat readiness of any unit. It is the understanding that everyone is going to do and is willing to do the right thing even when no one else is looking. Everyone is assigned tasks and details not only including your own job that you are expected to do and do right but hold others accountable as well as a system of “check yourself, than check your buddy.” Doing the job correctly and ensuring others do it as well and do it safely are all part of accountability in the military as it can be dangerous given the types of equipment and tools we use. As an example any tools and or equipment left unsupervised can be lost and or stolen. As such in that event if the tools and or equipment was left out instead of signed out the wrong person becomes accountable. Everyone is accountable for their actions. You should always act responsibly as well, not just yourself but everyone. We spend thousands of dollars for each person to be trained and when ready, the expectation at your permanent party duty station is that you are going to be accountable for your actions and you as an individual operate and, that everyone around you is going to do the same. It is what is not only taught but it is what’s expected from everyone. Being accountable means being dependable, showing up to work and to appointments on time, meeting deadlines, being at the right place and at the right time and doing the right thing at the right time. It is also to see if everyone showed up to work or where they are supposed to be. Accountability is not only for keeping track of other people it can also be for keeping track of money, gear, legal documents, and many other things.
