St. Josephs Center Reflection
This past Monday, October 24, 2016, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the St. Joseph Center. I had been the ST. Joseph’s Center three years ago as a freshman to do volunteer work. Unfortunately, I was unable to do much as a volunteer, and was not there for very long to really appreciate what the center had to offer. I was very excited to go back, and get a more hands on experience. When we first arrived, we were briefed on the history and set-up of the center, and about each of the residents we would be working with. I was amazed at how much the center has expanded over the years, and all the services that they provide. The center appeared to be very unique, and made me wonder why I had never heard of any other similar programs elsewhere. Growing up Staten Island of NYC, where some of the best medical services are available, I can confidently say there is so such service available on Staten Island. This really got me thinking, and made me realize how important St. Josephs Center is not just for Scranton, but how important and influential it can and should be for everyone. He was very resistant at first, which I totally expected, but became more welcoming to my touch, and by the end he did not want to let my hand go. I was also able to help Chris walk in his walker. I had having trouble keeping up with him he moved so quickly! I could tell how much Chris enjoyed walked, and how upset he was when it was time to be put back in his chair. We got all the residents back in their chairs and ready to go back down to their Day program. What I enjoyed most able the visit is when as we were leaving, the staff had music playing and we were able to spin the residents in their chairs and do a little dance party, which they all seemed so happy
