Sport and Politics: A study of the relationship between International Politics and Football

Författar Serge Bainvel e Author
Sammanfattning
Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to understand and demonstrate the narrow ties between sport and
International Relations. My purpose is to examine how Football especially is mixed with
International Relations in many levels. The theoretical framework deals with the nationalism theories. Nationalism theories have been relevant only for the last two decades. Nationalism has been developed in the two last centuries with the industrialisation. It can be considered as a political doctrine or ideology. The definition of
Nationalism is not obvious because there are no founding theorist or text on it. This process of nationalism induced nations to existence or self-determination. But extreme nationalism can be a danger. Nationals symbols have been created like language, food and drink, clothing, commemorative holidays, military heroes, flags, colours, and anthems.
Sport should not be forgotten in this Nationalism ideology. A qualitative study of all the books have been studied carefully. The thesis is based on a long historical approach that permitted to demonstrate the links between sport and International Relations.

In sports we have many sociological theories that influences the world today. These six sociological theories are functionalist, conflict, critical, interactions, critical feminist, and figuration. Society and culture are powerful influences on how valuable sports are perceived to be. “The influence of individuals within a society plays a role in the importance of sports. When young children are exposed to sports by their parents, either by playing or through fan behavior, they are more likely to enjoy sports as well.” The Functionalist theory is the importance of sports and inspiration. It’s the study how sports contribute to development of individual and group. Society and culture are powerful influences on how valuable sports are perceived…

Sports are cultural practices that differ from place to place and time to time. How they are defined, organized, and integrated into social life varies from group to group. To understand sports we must view them as social phenomena (Coakley & Donnelly, 2004). Viewing sports as a social phenomena means that one must realize that are many topics to be questioned and viewed upon with an open mind.…

For centuries the idea of a national identities was shaped and honed to best fit each group as they grew in power and size. Nationalism became a power within the civilization, power “derived from (a nation’s) ability to mobilize individuals towards collective goals, including protecting the nation from potential threat or struggling to secure an exclusive national territory.” (Painter, 2009) This is where the divide between nationalism and extreme nationalism begins. How and with what the nation “motivates” its population against a threat will be viewed by the rest of the world either as a threat in and of itself or simply as a nation rallying together. Germany in the 1930s and 40s experienced the worst kind of nationalism at the hands of the Nazi party and the world turned against it. Sports fans around the world express nationalism whenever they walk into an arena and the people love it. So what is it that determines good nationalism vs. bad nationalism? Is there really a difference? How is the modern push for nationalism in the United States different than movements from the…

In this essay I am going to be exploring the sporting environment being an arena for acts of violence and aggression and how they are permitted and given meaning through their association with the masculine ideals of toughness, heroism and sacrifice. As part of this a number of violent sports will be brought into the context of the essay. Also within the essay will include why these relate to the masculine ideals of toughness, heroism and sacrifice. It is important that this is discussed for a better understanding of the effects of violence and aggression within the sporting world and what consequence it is having on spectators as well as the growing ideals of the athletes/ participants.…

Sport is very important in our life. It is popular among young and old people. Many people do morning exercises, jog in the morning, train themselves in clubs, in different sections and take part in sport competitions. Other people like sports too, but they only watch sports games, listen to sports news. They prefer reading interesting stories about sportsmen. But they don't go in for sports. Physical training is an important subject at school. Pupils have got physical training lessons twice a week. Boys and girls play volley-ball and basket-ball at the lessons. There is a sportsground near our school and school-children go in foi sports in the open air. A lot of different competitions are held at schools, a great number of pupils take part in them. All participants try to get good results and become winners. Sport helps people to keep in good health. If you go in for sports, you have good health and don't catch cold. Children and grown-ups must take care of their health and do morning exercises regularly. There are some popular kinds of sports in our country: football, volley-ball, hockey, gymnastics, skiing, skating. Athletics is one of the most popular kinds of sports. It includes such kinds of sports as running, jumping and others. Everybody may choose the sport he (or she) is interested in. There are summer and winter sports. My favourite sport is swimming. I go to the swimming-pool twice a week. But I prefer to rest by the lake or the river and swim there. My friend Kostya goes in for boxing. He is a good boxer and he is a brave and courageous boy. His hobby helps him in his everyday…

Sport is one of the purest forms of combat. This world, which rewards toil and sweat, and designs true devotion and discipline to a cause, is far removed from the murky labyrinth that is politics. If politics is flighty, sport is downright earthy, basic. However, our political heavyweights bound the chasm between the two fields with aplomb. Therein lies the mystery. After all, why would a high-flying politician choose to link himself with low-profile sports like kabaddi, hockey or table tennis? Turns out that there is far more to the sports administration pie than just influence.…
